Love these!
My KEENs have been a companion for years, over many miles and various terrains. I'm really shocked at how well they've held up! They fit well and were comfortable right out of the box. Because I'm protective of my feet, I don't like to wear open toe sandals on adventures. The rugged toe bumpers solve that problem. Just so you don't think I work for KEEN, I do have two complaints (neither big enough to take away a star). First, the closed design does make it difficult to clear debris (and, they DO gather debris). Second, when the insoles get really gunky from mucky terrain, or just a lot of miles, they can be difficult to clean.
Poor Quality
I purchased my first pair of Keen sandals around the year 2000 and absolutely loved them. I loved them so much, I bought a second pair shortly thereafter. They fit me like a glove and the traction was superb, even on wet rocks. Those two pair of Keens lasted me for nearly 15 years! But they finally gave out. I loved them so much, I decided to buy a new pair of Keen Newport H2 sandals. Much to my surprise, they began to delaminate at the top where the rubber part of the sole comes over the toes. Within a month or two, the entire front of one of the sandals had detached and the other was well on its way. I thought I must have gotten a bad pair and decided to buy a second pair a little over a year ago. Once again, within 6 months, they started to delaminate over the toes once again, and not long thereafter, the entire front of both sandals was completely separated. I was very careful with my sandals, only hand washing them and air drying them. I can only assume that Keen changed the type of glue they were using to adhere the sole to the upper part of the sandal. I contacted customer support explaining the situation to them, but they refused a refund for the last pair I purchased because it had been over a year since I had purchased them. When I first purchased Keen sandals, I paid a premium price for a premium product. Now, they are still a premium price, but now it is for a marginal product.
Great design. Poor stitching/durability
I have purchased five pair of the H2 sandals over the last 4 years. Each pair has fallen apart at the side panel seam after 3-6 months of use. The stitching is always the problem. I recommend adding additional stitching to prevent seam failure. If you do this - repair them correctly after the seam fails, they will last a long time. They are a very comfortable sandal.
Shoes like All Terrain Vehicle
A sandal that is more function than from, I trekked and hiked thru multiple terrains and it handled them all very well. At water crossings, I saw people take off their hiking boots and put on water specific shoes, and then put on their boots again after the water. I recall hearing "I gotta get some Keen's. You guys smart." This is one shoe that does it all. Though there were plenty of bad reviews on this product, I took my chances because several of my friends also use this shoe. The sole is very tough, protective, and stable, tho maybe too hard for comfort. Another con is that little rocks can get into the foot bed and you have to take off your shoe to get them out. Shoe fit a little large so I had to get a half size down, even tho the manufacturer said the opposite. It is easy to get on and off, however when wet it is a little tighter. Overall great all-terrain shoe. Gave it 3 stars because of above cons.
Good shoe it....
...try them on first. I had a pair of these for years and they survived being submerged for days on rafting trips, frying in the sun, and generally being abused around town. Eventually the rubber front fell off so I had to buy a new pair. I ordered the same size as my old pair but I can hardly get them on. The elastic strap is a lot less elastic than it was previously and I struggle to get my foot into them. Once on, they fit like a pair slippers. Very comfortable.
Perfect for Hawaii trip.
We spent 10 days in Hawaii and a lot of hiking and sight seeing in wet and dry conditions. This is just about the perfect combination of protection, breathability and comfort. Only complaint is sand gets trapped inside, but they rinse out easily. Highly recommend.
Perfect for my needs
This purchase was my fourth pair of Keens in about 10 years. Be aware when ordering they run at least a half size smaller, so order up! Good color combinations. The women’s shoes don’t run large enough for me so I order men’s and it works out.
Favorite shoe for daily wear.
Bought for summer hiking but so comfortable that I ended up using them everyday (except when it rains), even at my jacket-and-tie job. Boss hasn't complained yet. Just purchased my third consecutive pair. Do wish Keen had a size 6.5 for men.
Not kidding about size
The warning about these shoes being a half size too small are true. Unfortunately they don't make 1/2 sizes past 13. Had to return, they were way too small. Also, this is more of a complaint to REI.... Shipping a shoe-box in a mailing bag, is bad form. The shoe-box was practically destroyed in transit.
Great shoe at a great price.
I bought these shoes for fording water features while backpacking. They are awesome for what I use them for. I also wear them as camp shoes. The toe protection is awesome and they fit well right out of the box. They don't dry as quickly as I'd like but that's not a deal breaker. Keen's wide toe box shoes and sandals are great for my wide problem feet.
