I was carrying the Black Diamond Storm as my primary headlight but switched to the Petzl Tacktikka. There are a few trade-offs. The Storm's batteries last longer and it has an indicator for battery strength. However, the Tactikka is weighs a little less so it rides better when running. The Tactikka seems to be a little brighter and it's a rechargeable/3A battery hybrid. The rechargeable battery ran a lot longer on high than the two hours estimated in the specs; closer to nine hours and on new 3As will push 24 hours with functional light. I keep the rechargeable in the light but carry three new 3As for backup. I'm not the biggest tech nerd but I figured out the functions pretty quickly.
Disregard the other reviews about cheap plastic. It’s not cheap or flimsy. It’s thin and lightweight. Big difference. I use it daily on my Álveo Vent helmet biking to work. I’ve dropped it and banged it around. It’s strong. The core battery is robust, lasts a while. Charging does take some time, not a rapid charge, but it’s as expected. Plugs into USB for cell phone charger or laptop. Taktikka has no reflective band or glow in the dark bezel. Other model, Aktika, does have reflective stuff. I wanted a clean black lamp with little print or distraction. It’s a mattte black cover and it’s plenty water resistant. I use it in the rain and snow. Extremely bright. 350 max lumens is a lot. Blinding. Red light is all you need for keeping your night eyes. Just hold the button down to switch between white and red. Excellent product. Petzl is the best at this stuff. They focus on headlamps intently. This is the best of all reasonably priced headlamps, and I’m a Petzl headlamp collector. I can say that with authority.
I love this light! The core battery is awesome and holds a charge for a long time. I have used this light for Hunting, hiking, backpacking, and trail running. It is versatile and bright. I love the new design to switch between the red light and the regular light so you won't kill your night vision. I Would recommend this light to anyone and everyone!
Received this headlamp in the mail today and am very disappointed in the quality of it. The plastic feels very cheap, the closure has too much play in it and won’t keep out any rain, and for 30$ more than any other headlamp I’ve bought I was expecting more from Petzl. I guess the other one has the waterproofing seal ( Actik Core) and not so with the Takitika. They both cost the same but one version has seal and other does not. What is the point in that for 70$? I will be returning this headlamp unused and will most likely stick w Black Diamond.
I will now only use Petzl. Switched from a Black Diamond. Very easy to use and switch back and forth from redlight to white. Stays secure on your head. I used it every night for a week and the battery did not get low. (Using mostly redlight). It got wet and very sandy with no problems. Easy to charge, comfortable. Great product!
If the technical specifications had included a measure of throw (lumens/area at a given distance) I would have realized the beam is insufficiently focused to see as far as I need to for nighttime cycling. Also, the case has to be opened to charge the battery but has flimsy plastic construction that obviously won’t last long. I’ll be returning it and sticking with my somewhat damaged black diamond until I can find another light.
States it has a red eye/map light?? Not on product, unless I misunderstood. Called REI, unable to answer ?. They referred me to company that manufactures product. Called and left problem & phone number to get back. No phone call returned. Bad service from both REI & manufacturer!!
Bought this a year ago and it’s been on 10+ overnight backpacking trips. Works well, has red light and 3 lumen settings. Would buy again
