Perfect for small adults!
I had tried snowshoeing last year with rented snowshoes and wanted to buy my own pair. When I researched snowshoes, I found that many recommended the same length snowshoe as for my skinny, but tall husband!! At 4'10", I found that hard to believe. These snowshoes are perfect for me! I'm well within the weight limit and certainly didn't need the extra length. The MSR Shift have all of the features of their "adult" snowshoes and worked extremely well for me in the hilly conditions in which I've used them.
Nice snowshoes, not great bindings
The snowshoes themselves seem to be of good quality. They've already been used to hit a couple of 4K footers, Lonesome Lake and some general hiking in the woods. The issue is the binding mechanism is a real pain to use. Even as an adult I find them difficult to get on and off and occasionally due to user error (easy to make) the binding will come undone. If I spend a lot of time making sure they are super snug they are pretty good. My other general complaint is the strap length (particularly on the heel) seems to be the same as the adult sized shoes which means there is excessive extra strap sticking out that needs to get tucked in somewhere.
Not as advertised
I enjoy going to the store sometimes but when ann item is not in stock I order online which leaves me to the mercy of the website description. The description states these have the same traction bar s and crampons as adult msr snowshoes. Maybe they mean metaphorically or similar to. Are the crampons the same shape-no, the same size-no the same number of points-no or the same metal thickness-no.
Difficult binding for children
To the point: the bindings are quite difficult for young kids to work. The problem is that the metal prong that protrudes through a hole in the rubber strap (works like a belt) is either too short or stands at too low an angle to the strap (take your pick). The result is that when the strap is pulled tight, it must be forced down onto the prong and that it not easy for a young child to do. In fact, it’s not that easy for an assisting adult. The child is more likely to accept a somewhat looser fit to get the job done. Today, my 12-year old granddaughter, a very independent and capable child who insists on putting her snowshoes on herself, walked out of them twice within 45 minutes, once because a front strap became loose and once because the unnecessarily long heel strap worked loosed from the plastic piece that holds its excess in place, and that was soon followed by failure of the prong-strap attachment. Increasing the length of the prong by a few millimeters would likely solve this problem, as would increasing the angle it makes with the straps.
M-aking S-on R-elationships
I purchased these snowshoes for my son 3 years ago. I am so thankful I bought these for my son. It has allowed me to bond with my son in the winter outdoors. Since the age of 5 now 9, he has gone on five 4 day winter backpacking/snowshoeing trips covering over 11+ miles in the Western Sierra's with these snowshoes. They have amazing traction, easy to use, light weight and I believe the best on the market for kids. The max weight for the best flotation for these snowshoes out rank all other companies which make them last longer, getting more use as your kid grows older. No need to look around for a pair of kid's snowshoes, get MSR Shift Youth Snowshoes. You will never regret it!
Great for 7 year old
My 7 year old did amazing with these on a backpacking trip.
Excellent for small adults
I'm a very small human and really struggled with the weight and size of the adult snowshoes on my pack (carrying them when I'll need them later in a hike). These were a total gamechanger for me. On more treacherous hikes, I still take my Lightning Ascents, but on everything else, these are more than sufficient. Traction far exceeded my expectations. If only they came with televators!! That is the one feature I really, really miss.

Great so far should come with a hill raiser bar for go up hill
Shift youth snowshoes
I like these snow shoes as they are shorter than the adult size, so I do not drag the back end in the snow. I wear a size 9 boot, and find that the fit is fine. The straps tend to come undone unless you have the black clips close to the buckles. I would prefer a slip in style snow shoe with risers in a shorter size, but I did not see a shorter style available for adults.
Sunrise in the snow...
The Evo's have let me enjoy wonderful sunrise in the mountains. I added the Evo-tail's for deep (powder) snow. What is great is the low weight, so longer trips in the mountain give more room for the other baggage. As with all MSR products, it is great to get maintenance parts after many years, although it has not been used yet that much due to the robust design.
