Yakima 50" (small) Jetstream bar with Timberline
I drive a 2016 Subaru Forester XT with factory side rails so I purchased the Yakima 50'' Jetsream bars (black) and Yakima Timberline towers with a 4pack of SKS keys. I did my research as usual before making the purchase and had read multiple reviews of how much wind noise these Jetstream Bars produce when compared to the square/circle crossbars bars. The bars are hardly audible; the only thing that I can pick up is a very faint whisper. The bars have been working great. It took an hour for the initial set-up from box to car but now that it's done, removing the towers/bars takes five minutes. During my first instal when moving one of the tower straps to the resting cradle position the strap pull broke. Still works, I just don't trust the other rubber pulls on the other three towers now. The SKS keys were easy to install and seem to be sturdy. The towers come with a screw tool that enables the user to loosen/tighten the straps. Be sure to to keep this in the vehicle when traveling with the bars, you never know when you may need it. The only problem I had with this purchase is not the product but REI across several departments... I called the 1-800 number twice to get these mistakes resolved and customer service was pleasant to deal with. I made the purchase online: bars (black), towers and locks. Two days later the bars showed up but were the wrong color. I contacted REI by phone to exchange them and within a minute of hanging up I received a return label by email and another confirmation email that the black bars were ordered. This time, I received the correct color, however, one bar had a major dent/gash in the face (wind side) and the protective coating was scratched off. To make things worse they looked like they had been a display model because no original packaging was inside... they instead put the bar end caps in a ziplock baggie and were missing 4 more pieces to attach the bars to the towers... I was pretty upset I was paying full price for something that was used as a demo and didn't come with anything original; even the film that the bars have for scratches in shipping was missing. I called REI again and explained to them what was going on. I believe I spoke with the same representative and was taken care of. They gave me overnight shipping and the next day by 11am the bars had arrived, correct color and factory packed.
Debating which cross-bars? Buy these!
The Yakima JetStream Bars are the second set of cross-bars I have installed on my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. These bars are excellent in comparison to the other brand in terms of wind noise - not because of the cross-bar design itself but because of the near seamless fit of the landing pads which caused whistling with the other brand. The press-down rubber track on these cross-bars keeps wind noise down and is more robust than the 2-piece rubber track found on other brands. Overall, Yakima’s roof rack system is a little more refined than other racks on the market.
Jetstream Bar Flew off While Driving.
One of the Baseline Towers flew off along with the Yakima Jetstream Bar while driving. Fortunately, I didn't have my roof top cargo box attached. Although the pitch bolt which holds the Bar to the Towers via the bar adapter had been tightened as per instructions (tighten until you hear 3 clicks), it came out. I then checked the other three Baseline Towers, and the pitch bolts was all loose. I have had the Jetstream Bars mounted on my car (without the roof top cargo box) for 3 years, however, I didn't expect this as there is no warning in the instructions to recheck them. If you have this Yakima system, be advised to check the pitch bolts in the BaseLine Towers to insure they are tight. The Jetstream Bars themselves are sturdy, however low rating due to attachment failing.
Excellent - after TWO sets that is...
I bought this along with the Skyline towers and Skybox 16 for my '17 CR-V for an upcoming cross-country move. There was a bit of an annoying problem though: I had to get TWO sets of bars; the first set I received from REI was missing all the mounting hardware, had NO packing in the box, and showed a ton of wear for a "new" set - these were a USED pair returned to REI at some point! Not sure how REI missed the mark with these bars I got, but to their credit they were extremely helpful and sent out a confirmed NEW replacement set to me at no charge with free overnight shipping with a return label for the old ones - and guaranteed I sent the old ones back in a heartbeat! Got the second box as promised (and they were indeed brand-new!) and it turned out to be a pretty easy (and fun!) installation project. In use, these bars have only minimal road noise at full highway speed, but time will tell how they'll workout moving from FL to WA with a full load. Though, they are high quality, feel extremely secure, and look great on my Honda so I doubt I'll have any issues! Hopefully my experience was an isolated incident, and that REI will screen their return merchandise a bit more thoroughly in the future to prevent these kinds of headaches; and please keep up the excellent customer service!
Strong
Sturdy and versatile. Able to install with minimal challenge.
Buy em'
According to Yakima, I was not supposed to put these 50" bars on my Audi Q5. I don't know why, as the recommended 60" bars had 7" of over hang on either side and the 70" bars would have been worse. I do understand that if you are carrying a ton of cargo boxes and accessories you may want the over hang. For my use I wanted something more streamline and I only need to carry a couple bikes or snowboards in winter. So my only frustration with this product was that I had to buy the 60" bars to realize I wanted the 50" and that they would still fit my car fine. The bars look great, they have approximately 2" of overhang and they are very quiet. At freeway speeds they make almost zero wind noise and most importantly no whistling noise. I will say that the directions for installing the system was not the greatest but on Yakima's site they have excellent instructional videos to get everything set up quickly and properly.
ok
does it do the job...yes, but seriously, the price of these things are offensive.
Awesome - No/Little Window Noise
This product is sleek and sturdy. No or very little wind noise with the bars themselves. With the FatCat Evo 4 attached, I did get some wind noise but that was with 4 skis, bars and ski attachment. Not noticeable at all really. Love this product paired with the Skyline towers for easy removal.
JetStream Bars are quieter and cleaner profile
Compared to early bars, JetStream Bars are very quiet even when my sunroof is open. The fit and finish is refined and professional. The gradations on the underside are very helpful when centering the bars on the towers. Very pleased I went with these bars.
Yakima JetStream Bars for Subaru WRX 21 review
* very easy to install except for 1 part * landing pads are hard to install when screwing into the roof screw holes. The issue is that the screws are a little too short to catch into the screw holes. I had to press the landing pads into the roof (~10 pounds of effort) so the screws could catch. * other people have reported whistling or sound at highway speeds, but I have not heard it after a week of driving * they look good!
