Great Kayak - Wilderness Systems Impresses!

We have had nine kayaks and have taken countless trips in the Pacific Northwest over the last six years. We have ended up with four of what I think are the best recreational kayaks money can buy after buying and selling a bunch of them (Three Pungo 120s and One Pungo 140). We love exploring and don't need to go crazy fast to get there. The exception is that I specifically bought the 14 foot Pungo to do a race that goes up against the current in the Deschutes. It's performed great and way better than the 120s. It definitely tracks way better and doesn't turn as well as the shorter ones, but as a 6' tall 190lb guy, I have no issue maneuvering this beast of a kayak around. We have packed tons of gear and food/drinks for beach lunches, etc. and the 140 is able to take more than any other kayak, so it turns into the drink cooler. The quality, storage, openness of the cockpit, weight, seat comfort, and durability are all top notch on this kayak. I am specifically writing this kayak to try and offset the low rating that the other person on here left. This is a wonderful kayak and if you are looking for something that can keep up with some of the sleeker and faster kayaks and don't mind giving up a little maneuverability, but still like stability, this is a great option.

Kayak Review, NOT shipping review like others...

I am writing this review for the kayak itself, NOT for problems with shipping or quality control. This kayak is great and the keel is not bent. I love all the bells and whistles, and its very fast and stable. Read other reviews online and you will see most people agree with me.

My attempt to buy this boat ended in failure.

My new Pungo 140 arrived defective - the keel is bent by several degrees near the stern. The result is that it takes at least four right strokes for every one left stroke to go in a straight line. If you paddle normally, the boat will make a U-turn. No amount of adjusting my sitting position or creative ballasting with gym weights would fix the issue. I returned the boat to the retailer. Upon inspection, they immediately agreed that there was cause for replacement. I waited two weeks. They got another new Pungo 140, and it had a *worse* keel deflection, and in addition also had hull denting at the fore and aft compartment bulkheads. We are moving backwards because the new boat is worse. I rejected the second boat without even taking it out of the store. To be clear, the sales staff agreed with me immediately that the boats are defective. So far my experience could be classified as "total disaster". One very frustrating trip on a boat with a mind of it's own, and then a disheartening replacement with a worse example. I don't have a boat, and the season is almost done. Wilderness Systems makes my favorite kayaks, and I love the Pungo 140. But somehow, somewhere, we do have a quality control issue here. Of all the things a boat builder must do, first *the keel must be dead straight*, and second *the hull must be symmetric and smooth*. If those two are not done correctly, no amount of cool hatch covers, cargo bungies, or "Kayak Konsoles" are going to fix it. I'm still working with my retailer (they have been great) and have faith that they will come through, but for now my 2016 season appears to be at an end. Based on my experience, I can not recommend this boat to a friend.
