Yellow, floats, sucks water. Doesn’t make toast. Not a toaster.

This pump broke on me the 2nd time I took it out. I was just putting my stuff away and clearing any water from it and the plunger just came out of the pump body, making it completely useless. Seems like however it is attached inside is extremely weak. I did not use any force on it whatsoever.

Defective design, complete junk!

This is a piece of safety equipment. It should not be designed to fail so quickly. I used it twice in practice and it failed on the second time bailing my kayak in the lake. Had to row to shore completely swamped. Thank god I was not in the ocean. Basically came apart soon as I started to bilge my second time using it. The handle you pull on is an aluminum rod. On the end of it inside the tube is a plastic part glued to the tip holding a rubber check valve. The glue failed likely since the made zero attempt to abrade the aluminum before glueing it on. No screws, rivets, notches, or anything to keep it from coming off. In time 100% of these will fail.

Dangerous

From the NRS website listing of this pump: "A swamped craft is as dangerous as it is uncomfortable." So glad I wasn't relying on it in a real emergency. First use, practicing bailouts and it broke after about 5 minutes, identical failure as described in all the other 1 star reviews in the last 8 years, even on their own website. Plenty of time for NRS to stop selling them or fix it. Shame on them for selling faulty safety equipment.

Works great for me!

I see other people claiming this broke after one use or whatever. But I've had this for five months now, and used it at least 2-3 times on each paddling trip and I've had no problems. I'm currently paddling a recreational kayak with a huge cockpit opening and no splash deck or spray skirt. My trips have ranged from 2-6 hours long. So, between drips from the paddle and me climbing in and out a few times each trip, I can get a lot of water in the boat. I pump during breaks, and again at the end before loading up the boat. I haven't had a single problem with the pump, so I'm quite happy with it.

Absolute Garbage

Bilge pumps are a necessary piece of safety gear than any kayaker needs on hand. This design from NRS, unfortunately, does not serve its purpose (and furthermore may provide a false sense of security). As other reviewers stated, when a full stroke is accomplished, a small bit of glue separates and renders the pump inoperable. Luckily I experienced this after cleaning my kayak and pumping water out. I fear if this happened during an emergency, the outcome could have been very dangerous. REI refused to offer a refund, but asked me if I wanted to purchase another...absolutely not.

broke on 3rd outing

Can confirm like many others if you accidentally take full strokes where the internal stopper hits the top of the chamber at full extension you will break it.

Broke first time I tried it. Shaft separated from internal plunger, with no way to fix it. Took it back for a full refund!

Broken

I was kayaking out on Lake Erie and had to use it a few times, it seemed to work extremely well the first few times. On the fourth time the rod separated from the internal plunger which i was unable to reattach. I am going to exchange it for a new one today and hope that this one was a fluke.

Worked Very Well!

I had to use it on my last trip. Hit some rapids and flipped. This made quick and easy work of getting the water out of the kayak while being in the water. Grateful that I secured it to the kayak with a line and caribiner so it wouldn't float away. Just placed an order to buy this style for all of our kayaks.I highly recommend this!
