Great General Mountaineering Axe
This is the first axe I have owned. I used it to climb MT Adams the week before memorial day. I like the slight curve which was nice when making the final push over piker's peak. It was a little more aggressive and felt sturdy. I liked the 59cm, it wasn't long enough to use as a pole unless it was steep. But, I didn't really need it as a pole unless it was steep. It performed great glissading down the mountain as well. It felt like a good middle ground axe for anything you would want. Pretty decent at everything.
Petzl Summit Axe
Purchased for general mountaineering and have been very happy. Plunges easy, light weight, cube allows room for your hand when climbing steeper terrain. I am 6’2” and got the 66cm version and it’s perfect. Used on Shasta Casaval Ridge and Whitney mountaineering route and have nothing bad to say about it. I did add a Petzl trigrest and pair this axe with the new version Sum’tec with hammer for more advanced terrain.
Great lightweight axe
I was looking for an axe that I could use for general and ski mountaineering. I have a ski pole with me most of the time so I opted for the 52cm length. I think this is a perfect length for my application (I'm 6'1"). It is super lightweight and feels comfortable with multiple grips.
Manufacturer-provided weight figures
For anyone wondering, the weights listed on the manufacturer website for the various sizes are as follows: 52 cm: 400g / 14.1oz 59 cm: 420g / 14.8oz 66 cm: 450g / 15.9oz
Excellent General Mountaineering Axe
Great tool, reasonable weight, 59cm great as an addition to trekking poles.
Perfect
Bought for a trip in the North Cascades. I agonized over whether or not I needed a grippy handle, but ended up glad I went without. My leather palm gloves and mittens provided more than enough grip themselves, and snow did not stick to my axe the way it did for my teammates with grippy handled models. Had no issue with grip while performing crevasse rescue or placing anchors.
Great simple and useful
great simple ice axe with sturdy construction. Has saved my butt a couple of times when I had to self arrest.
Great general mountaineering axe
I've used this on a couple of lesser peaks so far, it's a great axe! lightweight, strong head, sinks well into ice and provides a good strong anchor point. I really like that the adze doesn't have a hole in it. The curve also isn't too aggressive. I haven't had to used it to self arrest yet, but I have glissaded with it and it's been fine.
Summit 2
Did a lot of research prior to purchasing this ice axe. It will be used for glacier travel and general mountaineering. It won't be seeing use until later in the year during my upcoming 2months Alaska and Canada trip.
