A solid sock
Love the zero cushion socks. It would be so wonderful and inclusive feeling if your women's socks would stretch just a liiitttllee more for women with large calves. I can get the sock 90% over my calf but it runs out of stretch, unlike the men's socks. It ends up squeez9ng my calf right on the widest point of the muscle and causes cramping more easily when I'm skiing hard than the men's. Also blue was the only color available for women in early December but the men's had tons of options. Perhaps stock more socks for women, we like to be outdoorsy and active in winter too! And we're not all pin straight, we have curves that we want to embrace and not suffocate.
Disappointed
I went with the zero cushion because they don't make the race lights anymore. I'd prefer that. I don't mind the thinness, my feet stay warm in my snowboard boots. However, my feet slide terribly in the boots. Yes, my boots fit perfectly, toes just barely touching the front. With my other Smartwood socks, I don't have this problem. It feels like the socks are made with too much Nylon. I also don't feel the sock wicks away enough moisture. It's a disappointment, for sure. I've loved their stuff for so long and now I will probably move away from their product. The socks are comfortable and will probably just turn into cold weather socks and not be used for being active.
Comfortable versatile sock
Nice comfortable sock to wear in boots. Weather I'm walking around town in my snow boots, climbing mountains to go backcountry skiing, or riding horses in the winter. These socks feel great in boots. I like a thinner sock that stays in place and gives good feel for the foot. These socks do that. Nice fit, not a sloppy sock. They don't creep down and end up in your boot. My feet don't get clamy either, sock breathes and feet stay warm. I recommend having a few pair. They do wear out a bit faster but I wear them a lot.
Stiff uncomfartable fabric.
I purchased Smart Wool ultra light calf socks years ago. . . . and still have a few pairs left. I love them - soft comfotable wool but sturdy; never falling down and keeping me warm. I wear them every day - dress up or casual. ( I live in North east) The new updated socks are synthetic feeling and hard and not comfotable. They feel harsh and stiff. I returned all pairs I purchased; very disappointed. I love Smart Wool and will conitnue to look for a quality sock that is not synthetic and boardy feeling
Pill very badly after just 2-3 wears - do not recommend!
These stocks represent a drop off the cliff compared to Smartwool's iconic and now discontinued PHD Ultra Light cushion ski socks, of which I was a huge fan. I ordered three pairs because I loved the purple color, but after wearing the first pair just two times, I saw how badly they pilled and immediately returned the other two pairs. Ironically, the pair I wore twice looked ten times worse than my old PHD ultra light socks I have been wearing for the past 15 years. That is the problem they are trying to solve. They don't want socks that last, they want more frequent sales from folks who are good with wearing socks 2-3 times and then having to replace them. That's not me. Searching for a true replacement of the old PHD ultra lights from alternative brands. Smartwool's quality has gone out the window.
An Absolute Necessity!
I bought these socks, along with a bit heavier pair primarily for travel. I find that when I wear the heavier pair over these, my feet will stay warm and dry, even when I wear sandals! Which I did in January when traveling from Denver to Hawaii and back! With these socks I could and did travel light by wearing one all-purpose hiking sandal with a closed toe. They were a great addition to my packing list and take up very little space, and lightweight too!
Time will tell!
When it's cold in Vermont but there's no snow on the ground, I like to wear lightweight wool socks with regular street shoes. I've worn out (and darned) a couple pair) Smartwool PhD knee high socks to the point they had to be replaced. I ordered medium and they were much too tight so have now received the large size. They seem more like compression socks but hopefully, over time, they will loosen a bit to give a bit more breathability to my leg/calf.
I would buy again if the bands were comfortable.
I sit in a cool area at work. The socks kept me warm but the band near the knee was way too tight and it hurt. I wore the socks once and when I removed them after wearing all day, there were indentations on both my legs from the socks. I tried going on the website but could not get through. I also called several times to order different socks and there was no answer. I sent both pair back for a full refund.
Yes!!!
I have small, skinny feet and wide calves. I need the size Small for the performance fit (size 6. 5 - 7). These are the best ski socks ever because they are thin, warm and have enough give in the legs to not cut off circulation! I find myself wearing them under my regular pants as well because I love them so much!
Great socks!
I wear over the calf socks all winter and have had a hard time finding plain black ones. These Smartwool socks are exactly what I have been looking for. They fit perfectly, stay up all day and aren't bulky. Others have made my shoes and boots so tight that my feet got cold…… the opposite of what I want!
