My new summer staple…
Purchased these sandals about a week ago in the blue. First impression is they feel like a cross between a sneaker and a slipper. They are very comfortable and performance forward, as you would expect from an Astral footbed. Unlike other sandals, I wasn’t gripping my toes on the edge of the sole to ensure my foot stayed in place. The construction and design did that for me! The buckles allowed me to tighten down the sandals when needed on steeper sections of rock, but I most enjoyed wearing them rather loose. Only compliant so far is that they were slightly damp the morning after my yearly spring river jump!
Paddle worthy
Right out of the box I took them on a 6 day paddle in Costa Rica! They were perfect! I even went on a pretty strenuous hike in them with no problems! They were the only shoe I wore the whole 6 days!
Please try them on first
I really wanted to love these sandals, but alas, we are incompatible. First the good: these sandals are both attractive and sturdy, an often elusive combo. About the fit, though. I tried using the online tool and it steered me wrong - two sizes too small. After a return (kudos on the efficient exchange) I think I now have the right size, but that little raised star shaped bit on the sole does not hit my foot where the designer intended (unless the designer is a torture expert) so I either walk very slowly or I hobble. I was hoping for a go-to sandal, but I suspect these are going to go-to the back of my closet. If you can find a retailer to try them on first, go for it. Properly fit, they are probably awesome.
So close to five stars
The sandals surprised me in several ways. The fit is narrower than expected so wider feet might have issues, I did not. The sandal is surprisingly comfortable but I am really in between sizes and went with the smaller of the two. The little stars on the footbed are weird at first but after using for a while, I wasn't bothered by them. The one drawback for me are the huge top buckles. If they had a simple hook like at the heel that would slim the profile down a lot and make it better for a paddle boat-personal opinion. Pretty light weight, doesn't hold a lot of rocks or sand, comfortable right out of the box. They do stay wet a while but hey, they are river shoes. I give them a 4.5 stars. Astral just keeps on getting better.
Fatal flaw in footbed
I was excited to try on my new Astral sandals when they arrived. They felt instantly comfortable. Until I tried to walk and felt a lump under the ball of my foot. On inspection, I found a permanent ridge on the insole that seemed to be designed to fall between the toes and ball of the foot. Too bad for me and others whose feet proportions don't fit this Astral standard. I returned the sandals immediately. I am very disappointed, because they were recommended footwear for an upcoming Grand Canyon river trip.
Not for me
Not for people with back problem. I thought zero foot bed would be good for my back. The sandals are not good for my back pain. My mistake. I returned these but kept 3 colors I bought on sale. I think I may end up giving them away. I also bought the other style sandal and from another seller. Those don’t work with back pain either. They are great for my blance. Just don’t work for me.
My new everyday shoe!
The PFD sandal has become my favorite every day shoe! I pretty much lived in them my entire time on the Grand Canyon. They held up great with all the sand. The soles were super grippy jumping around on slick rocks and rafts. It was the perfect shoe for hiking all the side canyons. Even off the river I find myself wearing them out around town running errands. Very comfortable!
Grippy sole & secure fit
Great shoes for around and in water. I have had sandals in the past that claim they grip well on surfaces but slip around on most surfaces. These are great for on pool decks and rock hopping near tide pools. The sole's lugs aren't super deep, but they seem to have sipes. The fit is true to size and the closure is secure. Dry time is ok.
My favorite sandal!
My favorite sandal! They were extremely comfortable from the second I put them on. Normally I feel like I have to break in my sandals for them to be comfy but these were great right out of the gate. I felt skeptical ordering them because I have such bad luck with buying shoes online but I'm sold. Will definitely order again! Thanks!
Incredibly comfortable
These sandals feel like they're hugging my feet--soft & snug. There are 2 options for hooking the back strap, so I keep it looser for everyday wear and pull it tighter when I'm out walking through water. No rubbing or blisters. I have wide feet, and the fit is perfect. My foot is held while not being constricted.
