Always use packing cubes!
If you have never used packing cubes before, this is a great place to start. They are sturdy, made of great materials, and a decent price compared to other cube companies. I got these to use in my North Face Bade Camp duffel, size medium. They fit pretty darn good. I layed them flat on the bottom and was able to pack the rest of my gear on top. I didn't need to use the expanding feature because I simply did not pack enough clothing - thank you Smartwool merino! They helped manage where things go in the duffel instead of items floating around willy nilly. Organization for the win!
