Light and simple design
Easy to setup service and getting app for messaging. Took a moment to get our first few ‘test’ messages out but it was easy to use after setup finished
Inreach
The Garmin inreach gives me the peace of mind of knowing I’m safe when I’m hiking alone. Worth every penny
Activation failed & Navigation almost useless
Even after an hour last night and another hour today working with Garmin support my new device is not yet active on my pre-existing plan. I presume Garmin will get it working. Eventually. My use case for inReach is emergencies: to navigate if I'm lost and my other navigation tools have failed, or communicate if I'm off-plan late or need help. Consequently, mine is almost always powered off and carried in a protected place to maximize the chance it will work when I need it. Most reviews I've seen say the mapping/navigation functionality is essentially useless. I thought I could still use it for backup/emergency navigation if I pre-loaded my desired trail as a course and then, should I get lost, I could still navigate back to the trail. My trip planning is done on a laptop, and file copy over USB cable works and would be super convenient, but I have yet to find documentation on the file format and directory for course files. For now I need to move files from laptop to phone and then sync them to device using Messenger. Unnecessarily cumbersome. On GPSMAP64 one can select which routes to display on map, and then they always appear on map. On Mini 3 Plus the "course" is only visible on the map when in the Navigate mode. More complicated and less useful. Alternatively it is easy to record a waypoint and see your current GPS coordinates, which could help in a pinch if you have a paper map that includes them. The user interface is typical of older Garmin products I've used. It often seems harder to use than it should be, but with practice you can usually get it to work OK for your needs. Its not a bad idea to go try every button in the interface just to see what happens. Specifically I suggest you learn how to disable/enable the touch screen before taking it on trail. The physical buttons work well for navigating the user interface. Build quality seems typical of older Garmin products I've used, and those have performed well.
