How to Choose Insulated Jackets

It's lighter than the original and has the same features as the hoody by the same name—minus the hood, of course. The Arc'teryx Atom SL is one of the most useful (and packable) jackets you'll own.

This jacket is one of Arc'teryx's most versatile pieces, which is certainly reflected in how I use it. It offers just the right touch of warmth balanced with excellent breathability for high-output activities. I love how the lighter panels at the underarms let perspiration ventilate away while the insulated panels around your core conserve a little heat. For high elevation trail runs it's perfect for breezy ridges and summits, then I can peel it off once I warm back up on the descent. In the winter, I nearly always wear this jacket on the skin track, then throw a shell over it for the descent. (Add a puffy plus a shell if it's super cold.) In the shoulder seasons, it's the perfect standalone insulating layer for spring/fall trail runs and rides. Basically, this is in my pack nearly every time I leave the house to go outside. Trim fit, layers smoothly under exterior wind/rain shells.
Have loved the Atom SL Hoody for years, and this years upgrade to the fabric was a big win! I finally purchased the Jacket version without the hood and have been very happy to have a breathable mid-layer that doesn't have a hood getting in the way between layers. It has great lightweight insulation through the body and the DWR throughout the full jacket supports if you get caught in some light rain. I mostly wear this for light hikes for dog walks, but would also be a great piece for spring skiing if paired with a shell.
Super breatheable and great fit. I usually fit between small and medium and went with medium on this peice for a more relaxed around town fit. The insulation on jacket is perfect for spring - a put it on, leave it on type of jacket. Warm enough for those cool mornings but light enough to leave on once it heats up a bit. Overall very versatile. One issue is that the face fabric pilled the first time I wore it with a backpack. That surprised me as I imagine most users with this jacket or going to be carrying packs.
Love this layer style and insulation level. The Canvas color is casual enough as an urban staple, or out on the trails! I wore this all weekend working the evergreen mountainbike festival. I haven't reached for it again, since it's summer, and usually I'm a hoodie person, but I'll keep this for more professional situations in place of a blazer or midlayer.
I absolutely love the Atom SL Jacket! It’s perfect for layering and is super lightweight and breathable. I love how water resistant it is and is a great thin layer to wear trail running or even under a larger warmer jacket. I would highly recommend this jacket for all activities and love the blue Electra color!
Fit is consistent with my other Atom jackets from years past. The insulation is light enough for cool New England coastal summer evenings. The fabric is quiet and feels like it could be quite durable as well as feather light. I'm looking forward to giving this jacket a real workout.
It must be used as a mid layer as it is too thin and non wind proof for a layer on its own. Not warm or insulated. Breathable but super this with no inside pocket as the non SL version had. I’m use of having a mid layer that can be worn alone but not this one.
The SL Atom is so light and breathable. I use it for winter trail running or in summer for a chilly evenings. The side is breathable yet the front stays warm with the perfect amount of insulation. The fit is flattering!
Light insulation, great fit, super breathable + packable! This is an all-around great jacket to carry in your pack to keep you warm on those chilly spring and summer days.
Fantastic jacket that's incredibly versatile during the warmer months but need a layer in case temperatures dip, you're along the coast, or in evenings.
