Physically Uncomfortable. Actively Painful. Hard Pass.
Let’s cut to the chase: this hat is uncomfortable to the point of being painful. I couldn’t wear it for more than a few minutes, which kind of defeats the purpose of a hat. I bought the Outdoor Research Loam 5‑Panel hoping to replace a well‑loved (and very faded) green Nike cap I’ve had for over a decade. I wanted something comfortable, sun‑protective, and sweat‑friendly. Outdoor Research has a solid reputation, so I figured this was a safe bet. It was not. The outer panels are made of a webbed plastic material—fine, not my favorite, but acceptable. The real problem is that this webbing wraps under the cap and creates jagged edges that dig into your head and ears depending on how it sits. I’m not exaggerating when I say it actively pokes you. I never even made it past “is this comfortable?”—step one for any hat. Instant regret. One star. I would’ve gone negative if that were an option.

Love this hat! Just came off 4 days in the Eastern Sierra's. Held up perfectly on the trail and still looked great when we got back into town. I'll be stocking up on all 3 colors.
Great 5-panel hat!
I bought this primarily for post-biking headgear and gym workouts, but it’s become my go to hat around town too. I love a good 5 panel hat, but most of them feel like they were designed for toddlers. Not this one! I appreciate the low profile shape, solid construction, and ample venting. What more could you ask for?
