Cannot see properly out of the mesh net
I purchased this for a trip to SE Asia. This hat fits well and stores nicely into a tiny pouch. Unfortunately the mesh net is hard to see through, and after wearing it for 10 minutes my eyes got really tired, so I took it off and went with the old fashioned DEET spray. For casual use it is a little of an overkill. I can recommend it if you are allergic/opposed to DEET and are looking for a natural way to fend off insects. But the fact that I could not see through the net comfortably killed the deal for me.
Excellent Bug Protection
I bought the Bug Bucket back in 2009 after borrowing a regular over-the-hat bug net in 2008 to keep the Southern Utah juniper gnats away from my face. For those who do not know, juniper gnat is the local name for no-see-ums, and they get unbearably thick for about a month every summer. They are not deterred by DEET, citronella, Woodcutters, or anything else that is supposed to repel insects. This is the best bug net I've ever used. It is relatively easy to see through (if perfectly unobstructed vision is your goal, you should probably stick to sprays), very well-built, and very rugged. I hike off any paths in the back country in dense vegetation for survey, and have yet to tear a hole in the mesh. I also used the net in Guatemala when I was helping out a colleague, and found the hat to be very breathable in spite of the humidity.
A winner!
I bought this Bug Bucket last year on clearance. I live in central New Hampshire and we have bugs of all sorts from May through August. I was skeptical due to the goofy factor of this product, but I now use it daily when walking our dog. The hat is comfortable and I don't need to put on bug spray for black flies, mosquitos, deer flies and other pests. A great product from OR.
Solid hat
The hat was lightweight and I didn't feel too stuffy with the net deployed. The self stuffing feature is definitely handy for low volume packing. My only gripe is the fit. Wouldn't mind a tighter fit or adjustability, but with a buff around the head, it fits snug and absorbs less of my sweat. Solid hat overall and would recommend to anyone going into a big heavy environment.

One Dimensional For Buggy Conditions Only.
I was hoping this bucket hat would provide sun, bugs and light precipitation protection. Bug protection only! Bug netting does not wear properly under the brim when it is not used and with no chin strap the hat is not secure for windy conditions. Trying to avoid the wider brim hats for thru hiking, however it seems unavoidable.
Saves me from the gnats
Sure it looks goofy, but we can't do yardwork in our lush property in East Tennessee without it. Keeps the gnats out of the ears, eyes, and from biting. I've had one for a couple years. This one was for my husband because he kept borrowing mine. The mesh is small enough to keep even the tiniest bugs out.
Sanity Saver
This handy dandy very packable bug hat has become an essential part of my hiking, paddling and climbing kits. For those moments where you need to focus (belays, scrambles, technical hiking) and bugs are buzzing in your face, pop this on and keep doing your thing.
Underrated piece of gear
If you do any kind of outdoors activity in warm/warm-ish weather then this is something you should have in your gear pack. It's light and packable enough to just stow in the bottom of a bag all the time to have handy when bugs eventually appear.
Lightweight and Perfect
Used this up in Northern Saskatchewan during the May Fly season in July. It was so great to have as the mosquitos swarmed in the evening. Lightweight and compact so barely knew it was along for the ride until we needed it. Such a great product.
Worst sound in the world.
The second worst sound in the world is a mosquito buzzing around my face. The worst sound in the world is when the buzzing stops - that means he found a place to perch on my head. The bug bucket keeps my stress level down.
