Great, but hard to clean the cream color.

Love them. Nice and wide, stable, waterproof, good traction, good walkers. Get dirty if tromping around, gardening, muddy trails. A job to scrub and time to dry. Wanted to use oxyclean, but it would damage the gortex, so just soap and water and brush. Merrills fit my feet and i have hallux rigidus on my big toe. The soles are stiff enough and upper shoe roomy enough to not bother. I can also tighten the laces which seems to wrap my foot a little snugger for support. I wish they had a different color when I bought them, but I was desperate for good shoes after I landed in Seattle. At 170$ I was shocked, but thats what its come to.

Cushy sole, but overall too unsupportive

It has a cushy sole, but the rest of it is too light for hiking on rocky or unstable surfaces. During my 9-mile hike, my feet moved around too much inside the shoe, and not because it was too big. I have arthritis in my right foot, and I need more support than this shoe provides. It became too painful as my foot moved around. I’m returning them. Also, the little white part surrounding bottom lace hole is peeling away on one of the shoes already after just two wears.

May be best for lighter hikes

Bought these in preparation for hiking in Iceland, and needed waterproof shoes. As one reviewer mentioned, my heel kept sliding up so toe hit the front of the shoe causing serious bruising During an eight mile hike. However I am not a hiking shoe officianado so this could be a fix with more secure tying. I’ll likely use these on lighter hikes and seap for boots next time. Pleased with the pop of color though!

Great hiking shoes!!

These shoes are great! I bought these shoes for an extended trip to Greece and Italy and they were great for the uneven cobblestone/stone roads and sidewalks. There was no breaking in time needed, they were comfortable from the start. I did not have the heel slipping issues that many others have mentioned in their reviews. I laced the shoes all the way to the top hole which prevented the heel slippage. As for sizing, I have two pair of Merrill Moab hiking boots (one high, one low) in size 8 1/2, I have another pair of Merrill hiking shoes in size 8. I originally ordered these shoes in a size 8, but they were too small so I returned them (which was a very easy process) and got a size 8 1/2 and they fit perfectly. I can’t speak to how waterproof they are because we were fortunate on the three week trip and did not have any rain. I highly recommend these shoes.

Quality you’ve come to expect

These are comfortable and everything I’ve come to expect from Merrill as far as quality and construction go. However, these run about a half size small. I’m still giving five stars because they’re amazing, be advised, though you likely will have to order a half size or so up. Thankfully, REI has a really excellent exchange/return policy.

Don't buy

It is beyond me why Merrell would include such a cheapy insole on a shoe like this - there is no support whatsoever. My other Merrells have nice insoles. I could just add a good one, but even with another (nice) insole in them - and I tried this - the toe area has too much volume. And the material that is there creases & crinkles badly. I ordered this and the boot and both are going back. I'm sad because I love the colors!

Toe to heel drop is too high

Too much drop from heel to toe which caused soreness and fatigue to my feet. It feels like my feet are being forced forward and downward. These shoes are stiff and sturdy, but too wide for my size B width. Otherwise, this is a beautiful looking shoe and the grip is great, but I only needed these for walking. Unfortunately, I will be returning these shoes

Boots vs Shoes

Great fit and weight (bad color choice for hiking). I returned them and bought the boot version for ankle support.
