Best shoe for fast and light summits?
I bought a pair of the Salewa Wildfire NXTs after I started to suffer from severe pain in my Achilles heel when wearing my usual approach shoes for long distance day hikes. I needed a pair of shoes to wear for Capitol Peak that would have me wincing in pain after 5miles. I chose these since they appeared to be one of the more versatile approach shoes on the market. I did the complete 17 mile Capitol peak summit today and experienced no pain thanks to the soft and relatively low heel collar, no blisters, was able to scramble the class 4 sections, stick to the rocks when talus hopping just as well as anyone, and also was the only person in my party who did not experience toe pain while jogging back to the trailhead thanks to the larger than average toe box (relative to standard approach shoes). These shoes perform very well when wet, although do NOT stick if snow or ice gets stuck in the treads. I’m seriously impressed by this shoe, and will wear these on all future summer 14ers.
