Rube Goldberg inspired top

The 16oz bottle is the right form factor to fit securely in the pockets of many packs. Bottles that are taller or skinnier tend to fall out. The cap, however, is disappointing. To open it I need to hold the bottle in one hand while I pry open the flip part of the top. That’s annoying when I’m holding trekking poles or driving. I might as well have a screw top. The flip to top is unexpectedly heavy. It’s almost twice as heavy as the lightweight version of the simple “flex cap,” and considerably heavier than even the chug cap. Like the chug cap, the flip top is not insulated. The flex cap, by contrast, is insulated. Perhaps the worst aspect of the design is the complicated lever which opens and closes the sip port from the bottom of the cap. While it’s effective, it needs to be disassembled for cleaning. Besides the bother of disassembly and reassembly there’s the chance that a part is lost or not replaced and the mistake is not realized until liquid is running out. The flex cap, by contrast, has no parts to remove for cleaning. Some years ago Hydro Flask did have a very simple, very lightweight flip top. It had a plug on an arm that was manually pushed into an opening in the cap. It usually worked reasonably well but was not secure enough to be placed inside a pack. It seems that a similar top, with the addition of a locking lever, would work very well without adding so much complexity.
