I took this pad on an overnight trip in Big Sur and was seriously impressed. It packs down incredibly small but is still super comfortable. After a long hiking day, having a wider and stable sleeping surface made a huge difference. It’s easy to inflate, lightweight, and feels very well built. A great option for long-distance backpackers who care about both comfort and weight.
The Ultralight XR Insulated pad is the newest to my collection of pads and most likely going to be the most used. As an alpine climber, I'm am pretty obsessed with weight and packability, and this pad checks both boxes. Being only a little larger than the Ultralight, but much warmer, there really isn't any reason not to bring the Ultralight XR on most adventures. Only the coldest of days will require the Etherlight XR, so again I will most likely grab the Ultralight XR for it's warmth and size. If you are looking for an amazing all weather pad, this is the one! As for comfort, I am 165lbs and can sleep comfortably on my side with all of these pads.
First tried this out at home ( long version) and it was comfortable, long enough for extra clothes in the bottom even though I’m 6’2”) but a little squeaky. After wallowing around on the pad for a while, it seemed to stretch out and quiet down a lot, break in, and no longer bothersome. I was comfortable at camp and although in the fifties, I was comfortable and warm in my Hamelin 30long. Never hit the ground, and the first inflation bag I ever tried is a real plus. I actually got it back in the bag on the first try, a real bonus!
This is a solid content in the ultralight air mattress arena. It seems to have a solid mix of being lightweight, a small packed size, and a good r-value. This pad inflates very, very quickly. The design of the mattress allows it to require less air to inflate. Using the pump-sack, I had this inflated in three bagfuls of air. Combining this with the express valve, this is the quickest, easiest inflating pad I've tried. Very well done. I was worried that with how thin this mattress is, I might have issues. I didn't bottom out on this thing though. I'm a side sleeper, and my hips didn't touch the ground. Lounging before bed, propped on my stomach and elbows, my elbows didn't hit the ground either. I also had extra clearance in the foot area, so my feet didn't touch the slope of the tent. I took this out for a couple of nights in the low 30s and experienced no cold spots. Really the only gripe I have with it for now is when rotating in my sleep, sometimes the pad wants to kick out on whatever end doesn't have weight on it. Pretty common issue, but it seems exacerbated with this pad, I'm assuming because the sprung cells act as fold points. Overall I'm very happy with this pad and look forward to testing its durability over many nights camping.
Probably a fine mat; I like the weight and size of it, but was hoping the 21.5" wider width would maybe replace an older REI 25" pad I've been using for years while saving a bit of weight. The problem I have with it is that it's not wide enough - arms falling off the sides. The smaller width mats that tuck just under your body would probably be better in that regard; your arms still wouldn't be on a mat, but at least they'd be completely off rather than on a portion. The 25" pads allow your entire arm to rest on the mat nicely. Was hoping to mostly save a few ounces and a little bit of insurance with a new mat but I'll keep rocking the older one while I can.
I recently tried the Sea to Summit Ultralight XR sleeping pad and was impressed by how well it balances weight, comfort, and packability. It’s very lightweight and packs down small, making it easy to carry on backpacking trips. The Air Sprung Cell design makes it surprisingly comfortable for an ultralight pad, and I didn’t feel pressure points like I often do with thinner pads. I have only tried it in the California spring but it seems like a solid option for three-season use. Inflation and deflation are quick and easy. Overall, it’s a great choice if you want something light without sacrificing too much comfort.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've been a huge fan of Sea to Summit sleeping pads for years - I've bought every single person in my family one and had zero complaints. But, I'm always looking for new was to slim down my bike packing and backpacking setup. The fact that this mat is lighter, much smaller and somehow thicker and warmer just blows my mind. And it truly is noticeably smaller than my previous pad - by about 50% which makes a huge difference in my pack!
I have used this sleeping pad on two camping trips in the PNW since february. It has held up nice against the cold, sometimes wet or frosty ground. It’s super lightweight and packs up as small as a nalgene bottle. It’s perfect for me as i am into backpacking and bikepacking. I’m definitely an ultra lightweight gear head so this has been awesome to add to my gear collection.
I appreciate Sea to Summit continues to improve its products. This backpacking pad is smaller when packed and has a higher 'R' value than my other S2S backpacking pads. Given it packs so small, I may also carry this in my luggage when I travel should I get stuck at an airport and need to sleep for a few hours. Now I just need a similarly packable sleeping bag. Despite the pad being less than two inches thick, to my surprise, I didn't feel any pressure points throughout the night. The temps didn't allow me to validate the 'R' value. Like the other S2S pads I own, I appreciate the simple inflation process. My only criticism is this pad makes some noise when rolling over. This doesn't bother me but my wife noted it.
I've attempted to order this three times. The first time was online. Received the pad and opened it to check out my new gear. Ordered a size Regular, but immediately noticed it was considerably longer than 72". Took out the measuring tape and, sure enough, it's 87"! At first I thought it was a large pad packaged incorrectly in a regular box, but even the large pad is supposed to be only 78". It also measured at 26" wide, not 21.5" Returned the pad to the store figuring it was a fluke. Grabbed another size Regular pad from the shelf, brought home and opened it. Once again, an 26"x87" pad! Returned that pad to the store and had them order me another from online as there were no size regulars left in the store. If you're guessing that the pad that was delivered to my house was once again an 26"x87" then you're right! I got no idea what's going on here. Never had this sort of issue with sea to summit, REI, or any other company for that matter. Contacted Sea to Summit and they've yet to respond. Super disappointing, but I guess I'll move on to another pad. . .
