I have hiked in the Ultra Raptor for years. The Raptor 3 is a great shoe if you want stability and traction while walking or hiking on technical terrain. The ankle height is higher than Raptor 2 but isn’t a problem for me. They are true to size and have a wider toe box which I like. I highly recommend this hiker.
The Ultra Raptor 3 has been completely revamped. I've been wearing Ultra Raptors for years and this version did address some of the minor issues I had. The tongue now stays put better however they shortened it and, so out of the box the tongue edge digs a bit into the front of my ankle. It has softened with a few wears. I have a low volume, skinny foot (not narrow) and so I was nervous that this was redesigned a little wider to accommodate more foot sizes. I don't really notice it and I'm able to lace up enough to get the right fit. I use a different insole that takes up a little more volume so that helps. There's no longer an extra eye to do a runner's lock lacing and the laces aren't long enough for that, but I find my ankle is still secure. Traction is a little better on the Akyra but these are more comfortable. The Ultra Raptor is still going to be my go to hiking and backpacking shoe. I wear a 9-9.5 in dress shoes but always get a 42 (10) in these and they fit perfectly with just the right extra toe space you need for a hiker.
True to size. Wide comfortable toe box. Ankle height is higher than previous model so it may hit your ankle bones (it was ok for me). I really like the loop behind the ankle to help pull shoes on. Sturdy, aggressive sole. The tongue doesn't pull to the side like previous model. I have only walked in them so far, but think they will be great for hiking. All in all, I really like them.
