I really like the Topo Mountain Racer 3. The front of the shoe and mid foot fit great. Traction is decent - not quite as good as the Brooks Caldera, but good. There could be a little more support in the heal, but Topo does not seem to like heal support that much. If the surface is very uneven or covered with large rocks you may have to watch your heals. I would love if the shoe had a little wide out sole in the heal. Topo should look at Brooks shoes, even the Ghost, to learn about making light heal support. Note to Topo: being the lightest shoe is not always better. But I swear these and like them. I noticed that they changed somewhat with the Mountain Racer 4. I purchased the 3's while I could find them.
I purchased on sale several weeks ago and after being a huge Salomon user for the past 5 years, I’ve a new favorite. I hike and walk over 1,000 miles a year and need a maximum comfort shoe to dampen the vibration and stress on my body. The challenge is finding both the cushion and stability I need for the rugged terrain of Central Texas. These fit the bill, they’re very stable and offer the high level of cushion I need. I love the large toe box which I thought would lead to blisters but the added room combines with the snug heal and arch fit, seats my foot perfectly so there’s no extracurricular movement that would lead to potential blisters. I can have confidence in taking in a casual or intense hike up a 14er. I highly highly recommend these shoes, and do so much I bought a 2nd pair on sale.
Excellent trail runners/hikers. The soles are grippy and the forefoot width is very comfortable and stable. The mid foot and heal secure that part of the foot nicely. They seem to run a tad small or perhaps it's the turned up toe that make it feel that way, but regardless, I purchased a half size larger. The shoe volume is generous but not so much and a thicker sock doesn't do the trick. Give 'em a go!
I have not taken them out on the trails yet, but it is undoubtedly a great pair of shoes. The fit is excellent all around. The toe box is great for my wide feet, and a snug fit on the upper to prevent the feet from moving in the shoes. I should have bought more than one pair when it went on sale.
Love the wide toe box and comfortable fit!
