Features

  • From the photographer of The Mission and San Francisco's Chinatown
  • Having explored San Francisco neighborhoods in 3 celebrated books, Dick Evans turns here to the avian species that call the Bay Area home
  • With his photographer's eye, Dick Evans finds art and drama in the lives of birds, from the smallest sparrows to long-legged Great Blue Herons
  • He captures the pockets of wilderness in our cities that make the area a birder's paradise
  • 250 full-color photographs of birds among the waters in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, where over half of all bird species in the United States can be found
  • Text by Hannah Hindley

Made in USA.

From the publisher:
The "shadow" of the Golden Gate ecosystem referred to in the title is the Golden Gate itself, the various beaches of San Francisco and San Francisco Bay, the Marin Headlands, the California Delta, the Farallon Islands, the lakes of Golden Gate Park, and the tidal marshes of Oakland.

The book is the story of Bay Area bird conservation and natural history but also a kind of travel guide to these areas. And since the birds are photographed in public locations, the book is also an invitation to explore and see these birds.

The text by Hannah Hindley teases out the book's themes and connects the photographs gracefully with the awe and beauty of these birds, the interdependence of our relationship with them in the Bay Area, and the fascinating natural history and conservation history in which they are a part.
