Smartwool  Intraknit AS Merino Base Layer Crew Top - Men's

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like to look at apparel from 3 different categories. The first is fit. I am 6ft 165 and am wearing a size large. The sleeve length is perfect an I'm able to tuck in if needed. Second is versatility. This shirt has kept me comfortable on runs in temps varying from 30-60 degrees. It's warm, yet breathable unlike other base layers i've tried. 3rd is comfort. Not only is the intraknit tech performance based, it's also so soft and comfortable. I can throw this on for running errands and feel like I'm rocking lounge gear. I have received this product for free in exchange for my honest review.

Context: I work in the snowsports industry as an instructor and supervisor and spend a ton of my on-mountain time going back and forth between an indoor office and our ski terrain. Layering has always felt somewhat challenging here in the PNW. Add a lot of in-and-out between the office and the slopes and I found myself sweating more than usual in my normal layering setup. I tinkered a little, but struggled one one end or the other. Enter the Intraknit: Since this shirt arrived, my layering system has been pretty static. I wear the intrakit under my uninsulated bibs, covered by a lightweight fleece and then my ski shell. On really cold days, a down jacket goes between the fleece and the jacket. I've been really impressed by its fit in a layering system. It holds close to the skin but does not feel restrictive. Its thick enough to add some warmth without adding too much. When I'm running hot it breathes well and moves that moisture away from my body. On a couple of recent days when temps went up and the sun was out, I spent the day teaching and skiing in the shirt and a vest- no other layers. It performed admirably. It also just flat out feels good. No itch or scratch like I've experienced with some other wool layers. The blended material is soft and stretchy and holds its shape when worn a few days in a row. However, I can't really recommend pushing this particular top for too many days without washing it as it does not manage oder as well as I'd like. I've found that 2 days in a row is about as far as I want to take it. 3 days is doable if you aren't doing a lot of sweating. The day I stretched it out to 4 was unpleasant. I'm also a little concerned about the material's durability over time. I am, at this point, roughly 3 weeks in. The material is starting to pill at the points of contact between my bib straps and the shirt. I've followed all washing instructions precisely, and its not pilling anywhere else, so it seems to be related to the rubbing of the straps on the shirt. I'm not bothered by how it looks, and it won't stop me from ordering another one should it continue to perform the way it has over the last few weeks, but it is something to be aware of. I really want to give it 4. 5 stars, but as that option is not here and it still has some room to grow, 4 stars it is. That said, unless material pilling really bothers you, or you need a shirt you can wear for days at a time without washing, the intraknit is a worthy layer option. Let me start off by saying this is an awesome baselayer for any movement activity in the cold. The fit is true to size but snug along the body. As you'd expect for any baselayer. Though once it's on you don't feel restricted from motion. You can tell the key areas for moving your arms or shoulders are well engineered for movement. The moisture moves away from the body and doesn't make you feel cold. The odor control is impressive. I could wear this after my workout without being concerned I stunk. I also could wear the top 2-3 times between washings without feeling like I was avoiding others due to any bad smells. If you need a high quality baselayer that will last and you can use over and over, look no further. This is the one.

My go to for most days out here in Colorado dry air, wicks moisture with a natural fit, not over the top heavy, material is balanced for all but the coldest of days

Overall impressions are that the material was very comfortable, well insulated and breathed with high output sports. Fit is true to size but the style is more of a tight fit baselayer as pictured. I am normally a mens medium and some times mens large in shirts. I sized up and was pretty pleased with the fit. If you don't mind tighter layers I would stick true to size for sure.

This is my 7th intraknit shirt and most likely not my last. The fit is perfect and the material feels soft to the touch but durable enough for long days hiking or evenings just relaxing. Nothing wicks moisture like quality wool. Color options are great also.
