I have previously tried this product from REI years ago and I’m very impressed by the recent updates. I am a huge fan of the similar outdoor research and backcountry versions of this product. The new updates to the REI version include a better sweatwicking fabric and more tailored fit. I really appreciate the coverage on my hands as well too for some protection, as well as the coverage of the hood for my chin and the back of my neck. The fabric is super light without feeling like it would easily snag or tear while backcountry camping. I do wish the fabric was a bit more sweat wicking, and felt less plastic, but that is my only real criticism.
This top is perfect for running and hiking. I have been using it in 30+ degree weather in MN outside running, walking and hiking. It is thin, breathable, and not too fitting. I am between a medium and a large, glad I went with the large. The arms and thumbhole fit great. I also really appreciate the neck, it is higher, but not constrictive so when I pull the hood up to protect my ears, the top is very movable. I don't like things too tight and this is perfect for outside and can been worn in layers when colder too. This color is easy and goes with everything, I would get it in different colors for running. Perfect spring/fall layer.
I got this shirt primarily as a sun-protection layer, not a warmth layer, but I've been pleasantly surprised at how cozy and warm it is while still being breathable. I actually ended up wearing it in place of a sweatshirt a few days in a row, and it was breatheable and comfy for hiking, walking around with a baby in a wrap, and brunching without collecting any smells or smudges. The thumb holes were placed in a spot that let me cover my hands for a bit of extra warmth during the hike, and the hood wasn't constricting (an issue I have with many hooded layers). Overall I'm very pleased with this one & will definitely buy some more in different colors!
I live in sunny and humid South Florida and spend a lot of time outdoors being active or at my kids sporting events. I love long sleeved shirts like this because they keep the sun off but are breathable enough that I’m not sitting there baking in it. This shirt is easily the lightest weight one I’ve owned and almost feels like nothing is there. It does a great job of wicking sweat and not getting stuck on my skin. I love having the hood option to cover my neck when the sun is really strong overhead too. I also wore this as a base layer for a winter ski trip and the thumb holes were extremely convenient for that as well so that the sleeves didn’t get bunched up underneath. In terms of fit, the fit overall is great- the sleeve length is true to size. The only part I’d love to see a bit different is the length and maybe having the hem dropped a bit in the rear so that it doesn’t ride up when I wear a backpack. Generally though, for daily wear and keeping the sun off, this is a fantastic shirt and I’ll be buying other colors!
Love this shirt! I wasn't sure about the cowl neck before I put it on but I like that it gives extra neck coverage without feeling tight or constricting. Color is beautiful - sort of a clay/purple in the sun.The fabric is light and silky, feels like it breathes, and it drapes nicely. The day I wore it was about 70-75 degrees and sunny with a light breeze and this felt perfect. I did wear the hood towards the end of our walk and it blocked the intense sun without making me feel hotter. The ponytial slit in the back of the hood also seemed a little weird to me before I put it on, and with hair my length/thickness I don't feel like I'll use it much, but for someone with longer/thicker hair I think it would be great to have and it's not noticable if you don't use it. Also love the thumb holes at the end of the sleeves. I will definitely be wearing this shirt a lot!
This hoodie is a fantastic lightweight layer, whether worn on its own or as a breathable base. The hood offers excellent sun protection for your neck and head, while the thumbholes keep the sleeves securely in place to protect your hands. It features a flattering semi-fitted silhouette that looks great without feeling restrictive—perfect for any sunny outdoor activity.
I just bought this last week. I considered the REI Sahara but as a person who overheats quickly, the fabric is just a little too thick and doesn't breathe well for me. I'm normally a S but I got a M so it was a little more airy. I used it on a climbing trip and we were in direct sunlight, about 70+ degree weather and I felt significantly cooler than with other sun shirts that made me feel sticky. I am curious to try it in the summer and see how it holds up with all my outdoor activities. I'll likely be getting myself another one.
I was stoked when I saw this hoodie... until I put it on. While the lightweight fabric, ponytail hood, and nice long sleeves are exactly what I look for, the torso is far too short. If the length was at least 2 inches longer and it came in other light colors, it would be near perfect.
I wear size large in all of the REI sahara sun hoodies that I own (4 of them). So naturally I ordered a large in this. Nope - too small. Like overall just in general too small. Arms were shorter body was tighter. Guess I'll size up? I really hate when brands do this with sizing.
I bought the orange one first for fishing, primarily for UPF protection and I liked it so much I got the white one. The fabric is very lightweight and breathable. I like how high the collar on the neck comes and the sleeves and reach are very comfortable. The only change I would make is to make the length longer for complete coverage. I bought a 1x size and it fits well, the length coming just below my natural waist.
