I took this pair out today for a 21 km run on undulating trails and came away really impressed. The first thing that stood out was the low-profile design. It provides much better ground feel, which I personally prefer on more technical terrain, and it inspires a lot of confidence when picking up the pace. The 5 mm lugs performed brilliantly as well—I didn’t slip once, even on more challenging sections. The upper is exceptionally comfortable and secure, with no unwanted foot movement throughout the run. For warmer weather, this will be my go-to trail shoe for the foreseeable future. I've always enjoyed the Rebel range for road running, and this trail version carries over many of the qualities I love while adding the grip and stability needed off-road. It ticks a lot of boxes.
I have had the Rebel Trail afterglow size UK12.5 for 3 weeks now and went on 3 outings (including 2 long runs). Overall, the shoes perform really well. The vibram megagrip 5mm lugs was really good on all sort of trails, muddy, clay, dry and slightly rocky. The fuelcell foam felt harder than the one on rebel v5 or fuelcell comp elite, which made it hard on the legs on hard packed trail and tarmac section. The silver lining to this, is that is it protecting the feet well from rocks despite the absence of rock plate. The mesh is light and drying fairly quickly when wet. However it is staining really quickly because of mud etc even after washing with water and gentle brushing. Not a big deal but the afterglow will soon turn brown especially in the UK. The shoe size is completely off, unless this was made on purpose from New Balance. I am size UK11.5 (measure in NB shop) and I had to go UK12.5. Having said that, I am also a 2E width and although there was no wide fit available on the Rebel Trail, the extra size is working well for me. I think it is a good trail shoe for technical terrain but due to the hard compact foam I would limit to shorter distance up to marathon distance to save the legs.
Unfortunately I did not heed the previous review in regards to the fit. I am usually a 9EE in NB and really wanted the Vibram sole, but these fit ever so slightly shorter in length, I think mostly due to the pointiness of the shape and are narrow in width. Because of the top material I didn’t fully feel the narrowness but after walking for a day, my feet were in pain from the width. It seems NB doesn’t allow returns after wearing but the issue only revealed itself later after “wearing”
As soon as saw these I had to have a pair, waited couple of days for them to turn up and was pleasantly surprised that they looked just as good in the flesh as they did in the pictures. But unfortunately they didn't fit. My other trainers are all size 11 but these had a strange fit, very narrow and too long. Returned them back to the New Balance store and had a refund very promptly.
These trainers are not at the standard New Balance size fitting. I get 12.5 in all new balance trainers and have a pair of the standard Rebel V5s in 12.5 and they fit fine. These trail version though are too small fitting in 12.5, they are narrow, short on length and are uncomfortable. The trainer itself is good quality but the size is way off from the New Balance norm.
Love everything about these hikers. Bought them for an upcoming trip to Iceland and can’t wait to try them out on a glacier!
Just the right amount of cushion with an excellent sole. Fits as expected. Very grippy sole in all conditions.
Feels like the road rebel, a bit stiffer and with mega grip. Ran on wet rocks and roots with no issue.
Complete comfort, perfect for conditions and training
