The chemical plastic taste that is left in the “clean” water is terrible. I followed the directions on the life straw website of using baking soda and lemon juice. The bad taste was less intense, but still very noticeable. I’m sad to say I will be returning this water filter. The design is very robust, but the water taste is awful.
Lifestraw gave me this item to test for free. I used it while camping just outside of the boundary waters canoe area with a group of folks. Pros: Super durable. Large capacity. Water flows out at a good rate. Tastes better than any of the other water we drank. Areas for improvement: Was hard to fill the reservoir with lake water. Need a little carrying case for the backwash and plug so you don’t lose them. Overall, I’m super impressed with the quality of this product. It’s great for group camping in areas where there’s no reliable drinking water. I’ll definitely be using this again, many times.
First, I had a problem with the membrane microfilter. It worked maybe for 10 gallons and then had a horrible taste, very sour. I had this problem previously using a home filter from a different brand and it was when the filter broke down. I asked life straw to replace it and they did. I got about 20 gallons out of the new filter and then the lid on the bladder started leaking irreparably. Leaking is a problem I have had from the home filter from this brand, but I like the way the filter tasted so I transition to using the pitcher product. Overall, I'm satisfied with the way that the water generally tastes from these filters, but the quality control across this entire brand is just atrocious. I've now tried three different of their filter systems, And it's just completely unpredictable. With this specific peak series 8 L I have been left two times camping without a water source because of it failing. So after this I'm sorry I just have to swear off all of these products. This brand is unreliable.
After testing this product and others I've bought with tap water, I have found the taste of the "filtered" water to be terrible and worse than what comes from the tap. 2 products produce same results. Please advise on return for all I've purchased or supply a reason why taste is so awful.
I field tested a free 8L+8L setup given to me by the company to use while dry camping on Canyon Ferry Lake in Montana. Setup was a breeze, very intuitive and I didn't even need the setup instructions. I gathered water from a nearby creek feeding the lake, which was pretty clear to start with. Filling the dirty water bag was a bit awkward kneeling creekside due to the steep bank and I could only manage to get about 6L of water into the bag even with it completely submerged. I decided to wade into the creek to get a better angle and this worked so much better to get it completely full. I suspended the bag from a nearby tree with the clean catchment bag tethered directly below. The full 8L of water completely filtered in under 19 minutes, which meant the end product was still nice and cold when I got to taste test. The shoulder strap made for easy transport back to camp and cleaning/storing the bags once empty was very easy due to the large fill ports. LifeStraw hit another home-run with this product, I look forward to using it for years to come!
The peak gravity filter system is well made and looks tough enough to withstand plenty of use. Haven't had it out on the trail yet but it' will be the perfect size for our family.
I used this in a two day horsepack and it worked great. The flow never dwindled and I loved the sturdiness of it
I am happy with my purchase of the 8L. Have not tried it yet.
