Can I easily carry an extra lithium ion battery to exchange mid route as needed between charges? Will it handle a full, complete download of Adventure Cycling Transamerica digital route map (approximately 4,200 miles) less waypoints?

Asked by: Rleeprice61
I purchased an Edge 1000 when it was introduced and returned it to purchase an Edge 810 (I found the Edge 1000 display harder to read, even though it was physically larger, because the fonts were no larger than the 810). However, I have used Garmin products for many years and I have some general observations. Garmin does not design their products for long rides. I've ridden many double centuries (200 miles in one day) and 5 1200KM brevets (90 hours). None of their products work well for these types of rides. They have internal rechargeable batteries that cannot be replaced during a ride and some of them cannot be recharged during a ride (Edge 500). I have successfully ridden double centuries while charging my Edge 810 with my generator hub (shared with my lighting system), though I found once that it would not charge when the temperature exceeded 100F. Some friends have used charging pods to recharge their Edge 1000's, so I assume they can be charged from a generator hub. However, I find tending my cyclometer battery is not a task that is easily remembered when my main focus is on eating, hydration, staying alert and keeping the pedals turning. Second tip: I have tried unsuccessfully to load a complete route map for a 1200KM brevet into a Garmin (don't remember which model). There were limitations for number of nodes that the creation software did not warn me about that only showed up when I was ready to navigate! I would not attempt to put the 4,200 mile course into a single route unless you know someone who has already done this successfully with the same program and Garmin model, etc. I would cut the route into smaller pieces (maybe 100 miles each) and name them (keep in mind that you will only see a limited number of characters on the screen) so that you know the order in which to use them. This is a hassle, but if you have a problem with one segment, at least you will only lose 100 mi. of navigation rather than the whole trip. You are embarking on a truly epic journey and the last thing you want to be worried about is your cyclometer! Welcome to the lunatic fringe.

Will this also function off the bike while walking, if I wanted to do a hike and bike trip?

Asked by: glide
You could use this unit as a handheld GPS but it is limited in the data that a dedicated hand-held GPS will offer.
