It's true, the black OEM tri-pod mount out of the box is likely to crack, or come cracked. Mine had the same problem. The black housing is brittle and once it cracks, the metal threaded housing meant to screw onto the pole comes loose, leading to the camera falling off, with the black gopro mount still attached to the camera, but the camera + housing separated from the pole. The good...the XSories company had an efficient replacement policy, and the replacement part, seems to be holding so far. (It made it through a hike up Angel's Landing and The Narrows in Zion, so far.) XSories is located near GoPro HQ and they seem to have made a good effort to address this potentially costly problem.
Big disappointment
One of my kids bought me this before I went on a paragliding trip to Colombia in order to allow good video but eliminate the risk of my lines entangling in a helmet mounted camera. I had never used it and I packed in a suitcase with my clothes. I was disappointed to unpack and find the black plastic tripod mount was cracked. I don't know what possessed me to do this, but before another paragliding trip over gorgeous fall color I went back to REI and bought a replacement. Once again, never having been used, the tripod mount cracked before I even launched. The only good thing I can say is that it happened so soon I didn't lose an expensive camera. I successfully manage a small mountain of delicate electronics and other equipment that I use for paragliding, speedflying, SCUBA diving, kayaking, mountain biking, backcountry skiing, etc. I have had no significant breakage issues with any of this gear but I have now had two of these fail before I even used them.
