I used these boots 3-4 times car-camping, then once at Rocky Mtn for a 14 mile hike on a groomed trail. Like others, by the time I finished the hike, the boots were falling apart. I bought these boots at this price point hoping they would wear like my old Vasque boots (that hiked the entire Appalachian Trail without issue). These Asolo boots were the only ones available at the time of purchase, so I made the leap hoping to get YEARs of wear from them. Shame on Asolo and REI for selling this product. The Asolo website approved my request for new soling- at 100% cost for me to ship the boots to and from Italy for repair, plus the fee for repair. At that price, I’d rather buy another brand and take my chances with a company that stands behind their products.
I purchased these boots several years ago but didn’t get much use out of them because I was in school (two short backpacking trips and a handful of hiking trips). I finally broke them out the other day for a day hike, but mid hike both boots literally fell apart on me. Prior to the hike both boots were intact as I always check my gear before leaving. As you can see from the image, the hardly-worn soles literally peeled off. I was left struggling down the mountains without any grip on my boots to keep me from falling, and with bottoms that literally open to the gravel below. I’m pretty disappointed because really liked them until this happened. I paid a good amount of money for these and thought they would be around for awhile.
I bought a pair of these last April. They have lasted an entire season working on a backcountry trail crew in Northern Idaho where we were hiking about 70 miles a week in unforgiving terrain. There was no break-in period, and instantly were the most comfortable boots I've ever owned. The finish on the leather does scuff off, but it doesn't affect anything but the looks. They're still holding strong and going into their 2nd season of trail work in Montana.
I had these boots 8 years and have been very careful about taking care of them in between use, but only put miles on them a couple weekends per year. However, last weekend while backpacking, the sole completely fell off one of the boots with no warning. The other sole was on its way, but I caught it and tied it together before it fell off. I had to finish the trip with one chaco and one tied-up boot. I am hoping to get them resoled, but thus far the cobbler I have been in touch with said it's not possible. For the price you pay, these soles should last much longer than they did, which is unfortunate because otherwise the boots are great.
These are the worst hiking boots I’ve ever had. I bought them 6 months ago and have put less than 100 miles on them (which is nothing in my line of work). The soles have already completely delaminated and rotted away to the point where I can fit my entire hand between the sole and the boot. After contacting Asolo, they told me that the boots were no longer under warranty (which is a 2 year warranty) and that the soles were delaminating “due to their age.” In addition, they would do a one-time repair at my expense, plus shipping AND a cleaning fee. I will never buy Asolo boots again. They are terrible quality, they do NOT stand behind their products, and they do NOT value about their customers or their service.
The injection molding for the sloes comes apart with on one year. Have yet to find any shoe repair facility that will even attempt to fix this and no way to successfully contact the manufacturer for any product support.
Unacceptable that the sole falls off! Asolo uses poor material, and they have bad customer service.
Here's what my husband and my Asolo TPS 520 GV Evo Hiking Boots look like. Vasque boots well worn at 30+ years old. Don't count on Asolo.
After 5 years of flawless performance, the soles of both boots abruptly detached during a solo backpacking trip in the desert. I patched them with athletic tape and finished my trip. After some research, I see that this is a common issue with these boots. I'm choosing to repair them and keep them as long as I can because 1) I paid too much for these boots to get only 5 years of wear out of them, and 2) they are perfect in every other way. Most of my backpacking trips are solo, and I consider ankle and foot stability to be a major safety issue. These boots are 100% stable, grippy, and comfortable. I trust them completely to keep me upright and stable. I will continue using them as long as I can keep the soles attached - and will carry extra duct tape from now on!
I have had these boots for several years but have never worn them much because they just weren't that comfortable. I was just on a 5-day backpacking trip and on the 4th day noticed the sole bubbling a bit at the toe, which I thought was odd and annoying because I paid a lot of money for these and expected them to last for many years. The next day, fortunately our last on the trail, I tripped over what I thought must be a branch and looked down to discover the whole sole had come off all the way down to the heel! I ended up ripping it off the rest of the way and carrying the sole out. Other than this, the boots are warm and waterproof but very heavy.
