Great to start, but... Tried on everything at REI...longtime backpacker Sierra. Bought these and great fit, right out of the box. 300 trail miles later, toe cap de-lam and the leather seam at little toes blew out. To be truthful, we were mostly off trail, fishing and did 14 days out - so 40+ pound packs...typical trip. Did not think harsh, or that where we went mattered. When contacted Lowa, was told the Renegade was not warranted/ designed for off-trail or multi-day backpacking on-trail. They should tell you this!
I returned these after a week of wearing them around the house. They make my feet so tired, just wearing them around the house. All the muscles in my feet were sore, not sure if I received a bad pair and really surprised with the brand, because I really thought I was getting a one-and-done boot. I moved over to Keen and Oboz and I did not have the same problem. The Oboz are the most comfortable, the Keen is the most durable. The Keen have a narrow tongue and almost worth getting a cobbler to modify it as the rest of boot is that good. The Oboz are all day comfort, and they have a great sole, but missing some durability levels that the Keen succeeded to provide.
I have a year-old pair of Lowa Ticam II GTX boots which I love. Unfortunately I have problem feet, and the Renegades don't have exactly the same last as the Ticams, so they didn't QUITE fit my bad foot. The Renegades were going to be my "dress" boots, but I had to (regretfully) return them to the store. Potential buyers should note: these boots are leather lined. Haven't seen such a thing for years! Beautiful, but it also means that the boots are not "waterproof" in the usual way, with Gore-Tex lining. Not an issue for me. If I'd been able to wear them I'd probably have given 5 stars, as I did for the Ticams.
I wore a pair of these Renegade LL boots for about three years and they held up pretty well. It would be incorrect to assume that they’re heavy-duty boots like the Tibet since they were designed mostly for trekking and overnights, so carrying a multi-day pack is just going to tear them up.. to say nothing of your feet. They’re very comfortable and fit like sneakers. My only complaints were that the soles started falling off before the tread was gone and Lowa told me they couldn’t be re-soled. So they’re a $250. throwaway boot (as opposed to my Danner Lights that are on their 9th year and second soles).
I do about two 3-4 day backcountry hunts a year and about a dozen backcountry hikes a year with these boots for the last three years. I have packed out over 100 lbs of meat and supplies on my back with these boots on, great support. They have held up great, have hiked in snow, hot weather, rigid rock trails and mud. Great support on the ankles. My only complaint is the shoelaces are cheap, they don't stay tied up, for the price you think they could upgrade them, just buy some good ones before heading out.
Lowa only warrants their soles from delaminating for one year. With a boot this expensive I would expect that they would do better. I’ve had 3 pair of Lowas & all have had the footbed delaminate. Each time I was told by Lowa warranty that I was out of luck - even though I had hundreds of dollars invested.
I was disappointed in the quality of these boots. I hike a lot for work and these boots couldn’t make it more than 3 weeks. They were incredibly comfortable, but the sole started separating within 2 weeks. The stitching on multiple leather panels started to tear as well. I believe they would be fantastic for casual trail hiking, but can’t live up to off trail hiking for very long.
Ive worn these in Afghanistan, Washington state, and southern texas. Rucked, ran with load and pt' ed in these. Feel better then my nike air max. Hold up well and get great traction.
Was very pleased with the boot initially. I am a relatively casual hiker and within a year the stitching along the seams started coming out, so now they are impossible to weatherproof. The leather is still in good condition and the soles are holding up nicely several years in. I am very disappointed, by this critical flaw.
All leather mid hiker, that comes out of the box with leather soft amd supple, ready for wear. There was a very short break-in time, without causing any hot spots, chaffing or blisters. Was easy to treat for water proofing. Has a soft upper, and aggressive sole for narly terrain. Bringing these to Nepal for a trek to Everest Base Camp.
