- A very rough rule of thumb is that if packed efficiently, the Ursack Major can hold about 5 days worth of food for 1 person
- Bag measures about 8 x 14 in. (diam. x H) when cinched closed, holds about 650 cu. in. (10.7 L) and weighs 7.8 oz.
- Comes with an integrated 6 ft. long piece of 2,500 lb. tensile-strength cord
- Ursack highly recommends using an OPSak odor barrier bag or an aluminum liner (both not included) with the bag
- Updated version features a tighter weave and more than double the tear-strength of previous models
- Passed the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) test and was placed on its bear-resistant products list on July 31, 2014
- The IGBC list is relied on by many wilderness agencies but not all; wilderness restrictions may still apply depending on where you travel—please check first

Perfect
This thing is great. Much lighter than a bear keg, and much easier to pack. A bear keg takes up a ton of space in your pack regardless of how much food you're actually putting in it. The cloth Ursack is much more space friendly. And if you pack carefully, it can hold a lot more food than the description says; my son and I recently went on a week long trip to the Porcupine Mountains and it held all of our food. The rope that ties the bag shut is plenty long enough to secure the bag to the base of a tree in case there isn't a suitable place to hang it out of reach, or (in the case of most backcountry sites in the Porcupine Mountains) to tie a loop to hang the bag from a bear pole. After buying this, I can't believe I used a bulky, heavy bear keg for as long as I did.
PRODUCT FAILURE - do not buy - please discontinue
This product is a total failure, if they find it, bears will open it and eat all your food. That's what happened to me. Having a bear come into camp and take all one's food is hazardous to both bears and people. Once bears become accustomed to peoples' food they never go back, they have to be destroyed. The company URSACK which sells this product is doing a major disservice to bears and people. When I found my torn open sack, the only thing left was packaging on the ground. The bear got and ate everything edible in my bag, in spite of the bag being tied exactly as instructed. Not user error - company error! Don't buy this product, and REI, please remove this product from your line of merchandise. Thank you.
No Match for the Mouse...
Man, I wanted this to work out... I have 2 bear cans and they drive me nuts, so I was hoping. But the poor reviews are legit. Mouse ate right through the fabric and right through the brand-new opsac, which clearly was not scent-proof. And ate another hole on the way out rather than use the first hole, so it must have been pretty easy. He stuck around camp just to gloat, as you can see in the picture. So... it's not warrantied for critters and is really only designed for bears. I know this. Unfortunately, in the real world (outside of the interagency bear testing facility), there are critters. Certainly in the Eastern Sierras. And they easily eat holes through the bag, eat your food, and leave the bag susceptible to not only other critters, but bears. Because with those holes, any bear could then easily shred that bag. Nice in theory, but it just doesn't work in practice. Glad my buddy had some room in the bear can for the remainder of our trip, because that bear bag was worthless from then on.
Bear tore it open
While on the Colorado trail, a bear ripped mine open. I also had an opsak inside the ursack. Luckily, it was near my resupply. It is decently lightweight and fits in a small pack, but fails at its main job.
Durable and great shape
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was pleasantly surprised by this food sack, it’s so durable and still super light. I was especially fond of the shape of the bag which makes it great for maximizing the space.

Bear destroyed food
I also submitted this review for the other S29 Ursack, because I am not sure which one I purchased. Last year I used the S29 Ursack on a trip on the Colorado Trail. I purchased the "odor proof" bags for use as well. The one night I could not find a limb to hang it from I tied it securely to the trunk of a tree, following the manufacturer's directions. During the night a bear attacked it and completely destroyed all my food. The Ursack did remain intact and attached to the tree, so the bear was not rewarded, but I had to make a trip into Leadville to buy all new food. There was not a single food item that was salvagable. I have since purchased the aluminum liner and used it on a trip last month to Ocala National Forest, and I like that it adds support allowing me to strap the bag to the bottom of my backpack. It has not been bear tested yet however, as I hung the bag every night. I think the odor proof bags are worthless, and the aluminum liner is essential. I guess I will have to put it to the test next time by not hanging it.
Light weight but easily carried away!
I purchased this to reduce weight of my Bear Vault which was substantial. I never hung the bag and tied it like instructed. However, on a trip to do the Tahoe Rim Trail I decided to hang it because of reported bear activity. I hung the bag between 2-trees and 15+ft off the ground, see photo. The next morning the rope was there but the bag was gone never to be found. The bear vault my friend was using was still there. Lesson learned! If a bear wants something it will probably get it. In almost 50yrs of backpacking this was a first for me. I don't necessarly blame the bag but it was much easier for the bear to carry the bag away once it got it down.
Ursack - do NOT buy
All the Ursack bags we brought to our trip failed : the bear was either able to rip through the materials eating the food or to crunch through resulting to our food being crumbled and non usable.
This is a top quality bag
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This sack is your one stop shop. It is easily portable and you can take it where ever you want. It has drawstring’s that act as a handle and are utilized to secure the opening from being opened. The material is thick but not overly thick and it is very ridged. You can place food, clothing, medicine, basically anything you want and they come in different sizes to meet any of your needs.

Much more portable than a hard shell container
I love my Ursack and am delighted to discover they are now available at REI. These containers are far easier to pack than a bulky hard shell container. While my Ursack has never been subject to a bear attack (I still hang it in the trees), it has experienced the attentions of some frustrated marmots. They were not able to chew through the cloth at all. Criticisms of the sack typically address failures due to operator error. If you take the time to learn to tie the sack closed as instructed, you will not have any problems.
