Great addition

Great piece of gear. Replaced my lightweight fleece jackets, it's much more packable and comfortable than your 100 weight fleece. Definitely not a stand alone jacket under 50-60 degrees, unless you're running or doing some sort of high exertion activity. At first it seemed like a huge price point for such a specific piece of gear, however it's turned into one of my most versatile articles of clothing. It doesn't pack down as small as some down jackets of course, but at just under 10 oz. its much more useful year round than a full on down piece.

Not warm enough
Mikeskisandflies

First up, this jacket has specific uses. I know that. I have plenty of warmer down jackets. However, I will return this one after several months of use because I simply don't see it's purpose. It isn't warm enough for any other purpose than mid-layering, especially once in later fall and thru winter temps. I love, the cut, slim, and fashion of this piece, and the finishing details are of the usual high standard from Arcteryx, but the functional details (taping, elasticity etc) are now pretty standard industry wide, no need to pay a premium. REI branded products are just as functional for 1/4 of the price. Now, the cons. It's brittle. That's my biggest gripe. Walk near a bush and i am worried about ripping it, which means I never where it as an outer layer, and as a mid-layer it does not pack down small, and Heavy Weight thermals and more technical mid layer are a warmer combo. As a mid layer I PERSONALLY am not a fan of insulation, bulky, not so breathable, restrictive movement... and packability. This does not pack down small. I have a Feathered Friends stand alone Down Jacket.... which packs smaller... but which has 8oz of 850 Fill. That thing is treated for water-repellency and is durable.... and it is very warm. I don't see the point of a bulkier mid layer piece that I only use standalone in an urban environment in warmer temps. I've tried hard to accept this piece, tried it in various combinations, but I fail to see it's niche. It's also made in Bangladesh... no moral judgements but given how delicate the materials feel and how little "insulation fill" is used I'm struggling to see the price point. For comparison I use these 2 older favourites for the job of the Atom: Mid Layer technical: Marmot Variant Hooded. Lovely and warm POLARTECH, very durable, excellent tight and warm hood, thumb loops, brilliant freedom of movement. Warmer insulation: Feathered Friends & Brooks Range Mojave (when my girlfriend has pinched my FF). Combination of both: Arcteryx Gamma. Minimalist enough to layer (at a push), significantly weather proof, Very durable and tough, extremely warm but a loose hood, useable pockets. But very bulky to pack and "heavier", if that's a concern. I'm personally more bothered by packed size than weight. Ultimately, I'll return this product please REI.

Good design, but extremely poor quality

I own 5 Arcteryx jackets and all are top-notch quality. However, this one is disappointing and extremely poorly made. I exchanged one, but the same deal, so I think it is the manufacturer general problem. Share some pictures. If you are expecting good quality, I would not recommend it, but if you can live with it, good design jacket.

Amazing features towards the weather conditions

Hi, this product is a must buy for me . I bought it before my trip to wales in august and since then I’ve been on multiple climbs where it had poured with rain and the jacket has kept me warm and and dry for the whole time . The durability is immense as it can withstand so much more than described . I am very impressed with how it held up again storms when climbing snow don on multiple occasions . Highly recommend this item . The only thing I would like that could improve this piece of clothing is if it had a little inside pocket which would be perfect for a protein bar or phone . Thank you Arc’teryx

Great quality in low weight

Very good material, it weighs very little and warm enough to do intense physical exercise. With a thermal t-shirt and this model you can go out at Zero Degrees Celsius without problem

Perfect All Arounder

I've had this jacket for one summer so far. It's a perfect all arounder for me! It feels like a soft comfy long sleeve although it's technically a jacket. In the summer temps it's perfect and i've found that It's actually a really good jacket for biking and hiking! I can fit it under another down later on cold nights and it doesn't feel like you are wearing too much. I enjoy taking this as a business jacket during travel and on airplanes as it's very versatile and keeps me from overheating or getting cold inside.

Exceptional for summer activities

I bought this item before going out to Colorado for the summer and have nothing but positive things to say about it. I tend to run very warm (especially while moving) and finally found a jacket I can when hiking/scrambling at high altitudes. No more reaching for a light puffy that I know will make me sweat the moment I put it on, no more grunting it out by moving too fast to stay warm. I'm pleased to say I used this item climbing Maroon Bells, Castle, and La Plata and felt perfectly fine the whole time. Additionally, it also works perfectly for cool summer nights in the low 50s, and it's so light I pretty much always forget I'm wearing it!

Atom SL Review

(This review was collected as part of a promotion.) This was my first Arc'teryx piece. I bought this last year with the Kyanite fleece sweater. Great combo to wear during fall & spring & even during colder summer nights. This jacket is so comfortable that I could wear it all day even while working in front of my computer desk. The fleece panel under the wrist to the waist is super well thought out. The articulation on the cuffs is just great. I do wish it was even more articulated! The hand pockets is a bit higher than I had expected however it's not a pro nor con of this piece. I would recommend the LT version to be more versatile and would probably get more use out of Toronto weather. Overall, it's a solid jacket and great fitting piece for me.

The superlight, shoulder-season jacket

I have been able to put this jacket through multiple conditions this shoulder season: From light snow and wind at 12,000ft to a light breeze in the Santa Fe woods to airplanes and climbing rock as the sun sets in New England. This packs down small enough to throw in a cinch bag and carry on a harness as well capable enough to break the wind just enough on the fall nights to keep you warm on your descent from the alpine. I highly recommend this jacket - I will HIGHLY stress that this is a superlight (SL) jacket and that comes with the notion that grams are shaved to make it as light as possible and that comes with some drawbacks. The zippers and pockets are all up to Arcteryx quality - I have seen a couple of stitching issues right around the wrists where you might pull harder than you want but overall, this thing is a must. I think if you love being fast and light but also prepared this is the perfect jacket for windy days, chillier fall and spring days and also as a mid-layer for ice climbing with a shell on if it is not blistering cold.

My go-to

This jacket is underrated. It’s the perfect mid-level jacket for the in between seasons of spring and fall. I even find myself reaching for it on cool summer evenings. Because the SL is the lightweight and pared down version of its much more popular sibling the Atom LT, you don’t get the fuss and bells and whistles like an internal breast pocket, it still does the trick of staving off the chill and provides just enough breathability to support a quick run in cooler weather. For extra protection it throw on a hard shell and I’m good for a windy/rainy winter day. Yes it packs down well and provides a solid emergency layer when the temps unexpectedly dips.

Never left at home!

I've had this jacket for a couple of year and mostly use it for hiking and climbing in the spring/ summer/ autumn. I am planning on running in it this winter and I imagine it would also be a great ski touring layer. It could also be used as a mid-layer in colder months. The helmet compatible hood and high hand pockets are great for use with a harness making it an excellent alpine/ climbing jacket. It's so lightweight that that there really isn't any reason not to bring it on an adventure. The only improvement I would make would be for it to pack into its own pocket in order for it to go on the back of a harness.
