This might make the fanny pack cool again
I bought my first Mountainsmith "lumbar pack" in the mid-80's while skiing in Colorado. It held up well but the fabric has gotten a little brittle over the years and I found I usually opted for a full backpack when heading out. I still find myself needing a smaller pack to carry essentials on less adventurous outings and decided to give this latest iteration of the fanny pack a try. Materials are top notch and I really like the pocket on the right belt strap. The shoulder strap is versatile and provides the perfect amount of support when the main compartment is full and heavy.
Ditch the big backpacks
Love this lumbar pack and always get comments on it by people bogged down with full backpacks. I hike and climb in the Rocky Mountains frequently. Was looking for something I could take on short hikes and on longer 14er climbs. This was perfect for it. I added some additional molle pouches for emergency/first add supplies. During winter climbs, a few bungee cords and I can add my snow shoes. It's very customizable. Because of that you are going to load it down. So I recommend getting the strapettes to go with it. It's very sturdy. I load it down and beat it up and no rips or tears after over a year of use.
Excellent pack!
I bought this lumbar pack to replace my camelback hydration backpack, and I am glad I did! Why? I wanted more of a fanny pack style so my back wouldn't get sweaty- #1. #2 - I wanted the weight lower so I wasn't so top heavy feeling, when climbing around on rocks. The change to this pack made a huge difference. This is a great pack that does not disappoint! quality zippers, quality material. I love the cord on the back, it works great to shove a light jacket or rain jacket in so it hangs off the back of the pack. Everyone has something they like/want. This fits the bill for me. P.S. I would not use this without the "Strapettes", buy them. They make all the difference in the world!
Why try to fix it if it isn't broken
Same great Mountainsmith construction from the past, but a lot of the new updates should have been discussed with the users. The water bottle holders did need an update with an increase in size, but why did they increase the overall size of the. bag. Now the volume is too big to really call it a lumbar/butt pack! It's practically a backpack. If you fill this up and load it down with any amount of weight it starts to sag and forces you to throw on a shoulder strap... if I wanted a shoulder strap I would have just got a new backpack.
Mixed results with 2016 redesign
I waited to purchase the 2016 Tour Lumbar Pack because the side water bottle pockets were too small in the previous design and I knew Mountainsmith planned to fix this. This feature has been improved in the new model. However, I am disappointed with other changes to the 2016 model and unfortunately, will be returning the pack. The primary issue is that it appears the volume has increased by 1 liter. While it's always nice to have more volume, when the pack has some weight in it, it pulls away too far from my back, even with adjustment of compression straps. The pack doesn't seem well-centered on the waist belt (too much pack above waist belt). Maybe this is less of a problem on a large person (I am a medium tall, slim woman). I don't want to always have to use strapettes. More minor concerns: the lining on the waistbelt has an open "honeycomb" pattern. While this is probably good for ventilation, it looks like it might be easy to snag. Finally, I guess someone likes the new colors, but I liked the old selection a lot better.
not my thing
I've returned this item. When I did, the guy at REI said, "you either love these or you hate them." Hate would be too strong. But this definitely did not work for me. This is a well-designed product in many ways. The compression straps go a long way to making this wearable even when carrying a load that is heavy but does to completely fill out the pack. Still, I found the pack too cumbersome. I should acknowledge that I have a very small frame. (I'm 5'6" and under 100 lb.) It seems likely to me that a larger person would not be as bothered by the size and bulkiness of this item. But for me it was too much. Even though I liked the idea of being able to carry a large load in a hip/waist pack, I'm much happier with a significantly smaller hip/waist pack that fits my frame better and that does even better in the compression department.
Best Fanny Pack Ever
No other fanny pack compares with this Mountainsmith Tour Lumbar Pack. The designer really used his head. Its weight can be augmented with use of a stirrup strap which is ever so handy for weighty loads. I use mine while on safety patrol where I need to carry a modest first aid kit, extra water, bear spray, and an air horn, etc. Well worth the investment.
Not perfect, but good
I bought this to replace a smaller waistpack I use for canoe tripping to carry essentials on the trail. I took it out today for a 9 mile test hike. I loaded it with emergency supplies, lunch, and two liters of water, about an 8 pound load. All around, it worked well. I put the shoulder strap on first then fastened the waist belt. That way I could undo the waist belt and swing it around to the front to get at my water without have to take it off. When the bottles were full, it did want to pull away from my back and bounce around, but after an adjustment, it wasn't an issue. I like that it has a shoulder strap for more carrying options. I can carry it on my shoulder when I'm carrying the canoe and carry it on my front when I'm carrying packs. The quality of materials is good. I also like that straps to cinch the load forward hold the water bottles in place. A few things I didn't like about it: One is that it needs some more interior pockets for organizing small things like lip balm. The pack it's replacing had several of these. Also, at 6'2", the shoulder strap is a little short for me. All around, good, but not perfect.
Great small camera bag
Due to medical problems with neck had to down size from Nikon to Olympus mirrorless several years ago. Old camera bag still has my Nikon gear & needed a smaller bag. This bag is perfect: can get Oly M1mii with battery pack & pro lenses 12-40 f2.8, 6.5 -14 f2.8, 40-150 f2.8, & TC-1.4, plus four extra batteries, & SD cards. Sides have pockets for water bottles. Made well and comfortable to hang on waist for strap from shoulder. Four stars only because I wish the side pockets were a little higher for bottles bigger.
Best small backpack
I love it ,big enough co carry tablet pc,cloths ,documents and best at all two drinks
