I had high hopes for this bag, given its 40L sweet spot size, and that you could also attach the optional travel backpack (that REI doesn't carry). You must buy the 55L to get the daypack. It has great features, but those features take up a lot of the usable space. The padded laptop sleeve is very obtrusive to the main compartment---without a laptop in it! The harness when stowed, chews up valuable space in the main compartment as well. It's a great idea, but at the end of the day, those features take up a lot of the pack's space. I understand that the 55L ditches a lot of the features of the 40L, so there is more space, but that likely precludes it from being a carry on.
Excellent dual purpose backpack. Just recently used as a carry on. Shoulder/waist straps conveniently tuck away completely in zippered compartment with convenient top and side handles to carry on plane.
The Farpoint 40 is a large backpack with a 40L capacity; the Farpoint is sized to be more for a larger/heavier body shape and targeted toward men, while the Fairview would be a narrower option for women. Of course, get the bag that works best for your comfort (which is why I have the Farpoint - I found it more comfortable)! The bag itself is water resistant which makes it a great pack for travel or vacation adventures, and can work in conjunction with the (NOT INCLUDED) Farpoint/Fairview Travel Daypack. I was able to adjust this pack for comfort for myself as well as for my taller and heavier partner. This pack is one of my top picks for minimalist travel and works well as an air travel carry-on. In fact, I’m taking it again next week. The outside of the pack is water-resistant, and all zippers are generous and easy to use. The rear of the pack can zip closed for travel and transport (like stowing in an overhead bin) or unzip and stash below the waistbelt for backpack-style wearing. There is a small pocket that is hidden when zipped and can be used to house an ID. When zipped, fabric "garages" protect the zippers from damage. The shoulder straps are well padded but also offer some mesh for breathability. The sternum straps are adjustable and feature a built-in whistle. The waistbelt is also adjustable and offers the same padding as the shoulder straps. The front of the pack has external compression straps, handles on the side and top of the pack and loops to bungee for extra capacity (bungee not included). Two mesh bottle pockets/shove it pockets allow for storage but not at a high capacity (I don't think I could fit my 32oz bottle in there). A quick stash pocket is slightly hidden at the top of the pack and secures with a zipper. A larger slightly padded pocket can fit a 16 inch laptop or tablet, extends into the bag itself, and also secures with a zipper. The main compartment secures with lockable zippers. The main compartment of this pack is surprisingly large and features internal compression straps to help you squeeze even more gear into the pack. Inside the flap is a zippered mesh pouch perfect for storing items that need airflow and/or to be quickly grabbed. Items can be packed to better protect a laptop or just for space reasons. I've owned many Osprey packs and find this one to be closer to a hiking pack compared to a school or commuter pack. The bottom of the pack is tapered rather than boxy, which helps to tuck it close to your body but isn't helpful if you want to stand the bag upright. The main compartment is a zip-open rather than a top-loading design. The frame is a LightWire frame that helps to transfer load and works well with the padded hip belt. There are load lifter straps on the shoulder straps and the AirScape back panel helps to keep your back from getting too sweaty. My only actual frustration with the 40 is that the daypack is not included, while it is with the 55. This isn’t always clear when ordering this product. When coupled with Osprey's fantastic product guarantees and service, this pack is a fair value. Our family uses only Osprey bags, and we love them. This travel pack is consistent with the quality we expect from Osprey.
Loads of space, really well thought out and comfortable. Some features that make it even better than the last Farpoint 40.
Comfortable and spacious and ideal for travelling back packer style
