A little happiness-making machine
I have taken my Rio out to paddle on a lake, a canal, and a river (the Schuylkill) and it performed magnificently. A bit tippy, but once you get used to it, it's a benefit...edging turns are easy and responsive...I carve s-turns on the lake just for fun all the time now. Average speeds for me on 2 hour outings on the lake is around 4 MPH with top speeds a little over 6 MPH. I'm 52-years-old, 5'5", 135 lbs., and the Rio is PERFECTLY-sized for me...my foot pegs are adjusted almost all the way forward, so if you're much taller that, say, 5'8" or 6', then you might want to size up to a Skylark. Car-topping and carrying is a breeze. I have paddled on portions of rivers that's a bit low where other poly boats have bottomed-out, but I never did...unless you're heavier than me, you'll be fine in the Rio...like I said, it's perfectly-sized for me. It's easily the sexiest thing on the water on most of my trips and people compliment me on my red Rio all the time. Curbside pickup at my REI (King of Prussia, PA) was super convenient, and the staff helpful and friendly.
Great Kayak! Highly recommend!
We love them. They track well and are fast. These are worth the money you spend on them. Light weight at 35 lbs. makes it easy for one person to carry.
Great Beginner-Friendly Kayak
This is my first kayak and she is a beauty. Nabbed her at REI Seattle, thanks to the help of Tim and Steve. She scratches easily on sand plus from my paddle but otherwise has been an ease to load and unload onto my RAV4. She’s fast, an ease to get in and out of, plus gets tons of compliments. My only dislike is the seat tends to be uncomfortable for long rides. For my 5’2” 113 lbs frame, it’s a perfect fit. The narrow cockpit is great for my dry bags that I need quick access too.
A great kayak for smaller people
We are a couple of women who bought these kayaks to replace the Sky 10's that were too wide. These fit perfectly. They are *very* fast and are reasonably stable. We have better control over them since they are more narrow and we are small. One retailer let us know we should be 5'9" or less, which we are. It is better to be slender since they are about 24" in diameter. They only weigh 35 lbs and are easy to handle. Nice storage areas and guaranteed not to sink. We've tested that aspect in these kayaks as well as the Sky 10's and sure enough, no matter how much water they get in them or how long they stay upside-down or sideways, the Eddylines do not sink.
Tracks well, durable, light, comfortable, perfect
I purchased the Rio about 2 years ago after testing the fit at a REI store and taking a gamble on how it will behave in the water. This is my 4th and favorite kayak. I also own a Tarpoon 120- gave it to my husband, way too heavy for me, an Advanced Elements Convertible great for taking my dog along, and liquid logic xp. I am 5.4 and weigh about 120lb and the Rio fits me perfectly. I can paddle for 6+ hours without hurting anywhere. I have bumped along some Texas river low spots without breaking it. It is a total joy to paddle, fast and very responsive. Another bonus, I can get it on our Honda CR-V totally by myself, it is so very light.
Excellent kayak
Just put in river for first outing. The Rio is light (very nice to carry to and from water), maneuverable, comfortable, responsive, quick. Eddyline appears to be a small family business that adheres to environmentally sound practices. The Rio probably is best for someone not too large--the company spokesperson with whom I communicated said best if inseam is 30 or below (I am probably slighter more than this yet the boat fits great) and no larger that 9.5 shoe size. In addition, I always paddle upstream first, and the RIo cuts right through a fairly swift current. Some reviews I found complained that the Rio seat wasn't comfortable, but I am 62 and find the seat quite comfortable, in every capacity. Finally, the thermo-formed Rio body seems like a perfect choice in between the durability of plastic and the lightness of a composite body. I'm very pleased with my Rio.
Love, love, love this kayak
I purchased the Rio about a year ago after much research looking for a light weight kayak. I am 70 years old, 5'3" tall and weigh 120#. I am able to get the Rio on top of my Jeep by myself. I use a Malone kayak cart to get the kayak from the car down to the lake. The Rio is sleek, fast, stable and the envy of all my friends. We have big boats on our lake and it handles all the waves without any problems. After a year of use it still looks brand new.
like the fastest Little Sea Kayak
I can't say enough about the Rio. It is the perfect fit for a small paddler. I'm 5'4" and have always had a hard time with kayaks being too wide. The Rio is my Perfect fit! I don't have to worry about my paddle hitting the sides of the kayak because I am sitting so low and the cockpit is too wide. The fit is such that if I were to go over, I wouldn't fall right out of the seat and I could attempt to roll. It is light weight, so getting out on the water is not a heavy hassle. Also, like the other reviewer said, it is FAST! I'm used to sea kayaks and this boat is just like a mini sea kayak. The lines are beautiful and it handles very easily. Even scrambling up on the back deck, the lock bar is placed far enough to the stern that you won't get hung up on it.
First Eddyline
Heed the warnings about paddler size. I am 5'6" about 165 and I fit fine, but a 5'10" person would not fit. Go with another Eddyline model. Otherwise, the is a very responsive kayak. I have only been paddling about 6 months and it is going to take me a while to get used to it and master its responsiveness. My other kayak is a Wilderness Pungo 120 which is very stable. The Eddyline is also much lighter to lift and carry.
Great kayak for small individuals
I'm a 5'6" 145 lb female and *barely* fit in this kayak - my legs extended reach the top of the kayak and if I gained 10 lbs I don't think my hips would fit in the seat! So as a word of caution the 180 lb 5'10 male referenced below would most likely not fit comfortably in this kayak. It's definitely nimble and easy to load on a car rack unassisted. Everything I hoped for performance-wise for 2-3 hour long paddles along the lakefront. Just disappointed that I won't be able to share it with other who are slightly larger than myself.
