Can’t live without it!
I cannot live without this hat!  I’ve been wearing them daily for over 8 years.  I have two.  One is for dirty/rugged activities like backpacking, sailing and gardening. The other is for clean/cute activities like walking, sightseeing, or going to the farmer’s market. The foldability is great for traveling, honking, or even just to stick it in a pocket when you go inside, like at a restaurant.  The chin strap is great, and the glasses holder works perfectly. Tip:  switch your sunglasses and reading glasses from nose to brim when you’re outside and need to look at your phone or a map and compass..
Best hat ever!
When I discovered this hat, I was most enthusiastic about being able to fold it up to a nice flat size AND not damage it permanently. As someone who enjoys hiking vacations out of state and the country, this was an essential feature. As a 69 year old, I like to keep the UV rays from damaging my facial skin; the wide brim and not overly long neck cape accomplish this. The sunglasses holder is a nice feature for those who do wear them. I own several of these and would love to see it in khaki or beige shades. I recommend this hat to everyone in my 3+ hiking groups (once, we had a head count of 7 of us wearing the pumice colored style!) and to all customers at the outdoor store at which I am employed.
Great backpacking hat
I took a different hat with me on a backpacking trip and I realized before we hit the trail that it was not going to work. It had a stiff brim, and my large pack kept bumping into the brim and knocking it off my head. A quick stop at REI for this hat, and I was all set. The floppy neck protector kept the sun off my neck, the adjustable drawstring under my chin kept the hat on my head on windy mountaintops and the vents in the cap kept my head cool. It is also very lightweight, which is great for backpacking, although since I never took it off my head, it wouldn't have added weight to my pack anyway!
A small gripe
I got this hat for working outside and I can already tell it’s going to be great for my line of work. I have the smallest complaint. When I received the package in the mail it was put in a box so big that usps couldn’t put it in our mailbox….. My girlfriend had to drive to the post office on a workday to pick it up.. really not a big deal but this hat folds up so it could almost fit in an envelope! It even has a perforated brim so it wouldn’t have a crease in it…. Like I said, small gripe but figured you guys should know. I love rei and will continue supporting this company for a long long time.
Dorky but 'cool'
OK, so I am semi bald, and sun screen alone will not save my noggin. I hate hiking with base ball caps, so I check this Ultra hat in the store and used on my recent Mt. Baldy hike. Excellent protection throughout the 4 hours I was hiking in the sun. So light, you don't even realize it is on, yet great sun protection. The wide brim also with the dark underside also helps with glare, and 20 mile an hour wind gusts at the summit couldn't tear it lose either. I look a bit 'dorky' with the hat, but hey, at 60, who cares, at least I am well protedted
Added Weights to Neck Flap
Taking one star off because it makes you look dorky! But, otherwise, it's a great hat. I agree with all of the reviews that complain about the back flap that's supposed to cover your neck flapping around and exposing your neck during windy conditions. Until they fix that flaw, I bought a four-pack of little round magnets for $6 on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/DIYMAG-Neodymium-Magnets%EF%BC%8CRare-Double-Sided-Scientific/dp/B0CDPJDHP4/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2SWYSK0M6Q6PO&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.CrMcJiix-KVrp6sX9xj5OeJ9_F0EAyqASUm70w12CcvfQdMISNIZUW8I5OUvCT-vPKexmOzHeYnTieOE9EpP5yPyE1uNFqi2jfkX1ScGHUsqM0xYS3YjRiqRPjElaTE7prHkCuRwXOhM5aLHGCYHSjwTvMXMInBzcMiwuLaViy6gPDSNFKkmEGakkS4cr36paOwntgl-Vw9tx21ZYAmIrItMSkQUYa7_a_jIgciiDo4aDX8X5LFfI-qEQ5gIrN_O79fJr_tLFCUJPMbIEEtZ-wWtaSQkAIl0i4BHtDHyKLM.K45fMEai9991rzcKVrFius3EteJlb3kKmhopfKO4Asc&dib_tag=se&s=industrial&sprefix=round+magne%2Cindustrial%2C141 On the lower corners of the back flap, I put one magnet on each side of the flap and stick them together. Ta-daa. Now, the back ends are weighted and stay down. Plus, it's easy to unstick the magnets when you want to wash the hat.
Best hat.
I've had this hat for years, probably 7-8 now, and have worn it on 90% of my regular hikes. I always machine-wash it with other performance clothes (in a mesh bag and using special sports wash) and then dry it flat so the brim is straightened. It has held up amazingly well for a hat that is supposed to be hand-wash only... I picked up a second one several years ago in case the original one is not usable anymore but it's been sitting in the closet. This hat is amazing in windy conditions, the only one that won't flap around. I rather wear this hat than a ball cap to protect my cheeks from the sun (where I have had suspicious looking moles removed). And when it rains it even fits under the hood of my rain jacket or poncho and the brim provides some extra protection for my eyes and glasses. I don't think it looks dorky at all--it looks smart. Best hiking hat ever. I've tried other fine hats but always come back to this one for longer hikes and backpacking adventures because I know for sure it will perform. The photos are from last month, with the old hat. In cold weather, I wear a buff underneath to keep my ears warm. The hat is adjustable so a slightly larger size works well for all conditions.
Inadequate Sun Protection...
An 'Ultra' adventure hat would keep the regular adventure hat brim-width and cape dimensions, and add a folding brim (excellent improvement, it makes it packable) as well as other features. (I have to wear my glasses all the time, so the sunglasses holder feature is useless to me.) This version has a narrower brim and cape and doesn't provide adequate sun protection. The adventure hat has great sun protection, but isn't easily packable (brim creases when rolled). Disappointed, I will be looking elsewhere for an effective sun hat.
Excellent hat, some variation in size
I bought this hat online from REI for an upcoming trip, and when I tried it on, my partner laughed at me because of the eccentric fashionability of the hat. I loved the sun protection of it, though, and kept trying it out. A week before the trip, my partner decided they wanted one too! I bought a second one at REI in person. When we compared the two, though, they were noticeably different in size, even though both were labeled S/M. Not a big deal for us; the second, smaller one still fit me, and my partner got the first one. When traveling, others in our group kept remarking at how well our hats shaded our faces and even how fashionable they looked! I also love how packable this hat is. I’d definitely recommend this hat, but I’d recommend trying it on in person if you can.
Not for very windy and sunny conditions
Oddly we love our son’s three Sunday Afternoon hats which have stood up for several years now in all sunny and windy conditions. He wanted one that had a back neck covering and so we chose this one as a matching for both him and dad as a Father’s Day gift. Three times they have gone golfing, biking or to the beach, even with lots of applied sunscreen, they’re quite pink and the brim flies up quickly. I feel badly because we again absolutely love our son’s other hats which we’ve gone back to using but this one is a pass and now I guess I will pack them away until we go somewhere not so windy and will need to look for an alternative hat.
