So this is just going to be a quick, basic review of the NEW 2016 edition, I will do a full review later. So I've been doing a lot of research and reading many reviews on multiple tents over the last couple months and I went with this Kingdom 6 tent, footprint, and the garage attachment, and I'm very glad I did. I have not tested this tent out yet, I've only set it up in a grassy area because I was so excited after I bought it that I had to just put it together. The first thing you notice is the quality, quality of the carrying backpack, tent, rainfly, and stakes as well. I highly recommend getting the footprint, my girlfriend really didn't want me to "waste" my money on the footprint when I could just get a tarp for $7 that does the same thing, but a regular tarp doesn't do the same thing. First of all, the footprint is perfectly sized and is a little smaller than the tent so water doesn't pool underneath, the tabs on the corners align with the corner tabs on the tent which is cool, and you can find your tent location and stake the footprint down to make deciding on the location of the tent a little easier. Next, if you own a kingdom tent, just invest in the garage, it's really awesome and it's only 100 bucks ($80 if you wait to use a coupon), you can sit under the awning when it's raining and you can cook under there when it's raining as well (If you buy the garage, also buy two of the "REI 6' Adjustable Tarp Pole's", it'll be $50 for both but they're high quality and allow the awning to be used properly). You can stand up comfortably and walk around in this tent which is really nice. It does seem like the "bedroom" can get hot very easily and I'll test that out and post another review after I've used the tent. I mainly wanted to write this quick review so I can post some pictures of the newer version since there's no pictures yet, so here you go, enjoy.
I’ve slept in this tent for 21 nights over seven trips where it rained on four of them. I’ve also used this tent with the garage five times. Yes, it’s big and can be difficult to pitch in tight spaces, but it’s my go-to tent for car camping. I’ve never had a problem with rain nor condensation. I haven’t used this in wind above 35 mph, so I cannot attest to its wind strength. I’ve also never felt the need to use guylines. This tent has mostly been used for festival-type camping, but it is not something I would take to Burning Man.
We upgraded to this tent from a Marmot Limestone due to family size. It has exceeded expectations. We easily fit a family of 5 (one in a travel crib) in the tent. Highly recommend the garage attachment as it is a game changer in bad weather. The tent withstood a sudden and serious storm, even after we evacuated and thought it would be lost due to extreme winds. Well done REI.
I've taken this tent quail hunting in South Texas, the beaches of Padre Island,Texas and Oahu, Hawaii (Bellows Field and it's awesome. Plenty of pockets, standing room.. I'm glad I got the footprint and the garage.
A sold 4 stars. There are couple minor tweaks that would make this tent 5. I would recommend purchasing the Kingdom garage with any of the Kingdom tents. Very roomy tent. Easy to setup with 1 person. We had 2 adult cots and the kids bunk bed cots in this tent with a nice lane for foot traffic down the center. The ceiling had loop and it fit 2 Goal Zero mini-lites perfectly. Only minor complaints - The zipper pulls on the inside doors are difficult to locate. When you fold up the divider in the middle, it comes unrolled and does not stay in place. When you roll down the windows on the doors, they also come unrolled and don't stay in place.
I researched many tents before purchasing. I am pleased that I chose the Kingdom 6. Steady rain for a couple of days in the mountains. Tent stayed dry. Glad I purchased the garage with poles. Made a nice area to get out of the rain. The extra storage/working area was useful. Just loved my week in the Rocky Mountains with this tent. Held up to heavy rains without leaking. Was not able to test how it held up to strong winds. We camped in heavy tree coverage. I am confident it will hold up to wind just fine. After reading some of the other reviews, I applied the advice of a few and added extra stakes and tie downs just in case. This tent holds four adults comfortably. It would be too tight with 6 adults. The divider in the middle is great for privacy, but it limits how one could utilize the space. A combination of adults and children could fit up to six. When the rain fly is off it offers a beautiful view of the sky and trees. The two separate doors provides private entrance for each side. The zip down windows provides excellent ventilation with keeping some privacy. I can't express fully how much I love this tent. Highly recommended!
I bought this tent for my fly fishing trips and packing with my mules and horses.. Whether in NC and pitched for a weekend to 10 days or in Wyoming pitched for 10 plus days it gives me security and shelter that anyone would be proud of. Weight around 20 lbs it is GREAT to pack on to my mules and set out for the wilderness for 5 to 10 days. Whether I am fly fishing or clearing down timber from trails, (BCH of America trail work} this is a GREAT tent to come back to. Yes I would recommend this tent for extended stays whether car camping or packing into the wilderness.
Bought this tent 2 years ago. We liked it for the most part except the zippers tend to get stuck and it’s difficult to open them one handed. We used it this past month for the 3rd or 4th time. We were on a group camping trip with a bunch of other families. Some wind and a storm blew through. Three poles along one side of our tent got completely bent and now it's unusable. Rei wont let us return it, give us new poles or anything. Funny thing is, of all the many tents up during the storm, only ours and a friend with a Kingdom 4 had any problems. One of his poles snapped from the wind. Sounds like a design flaw, and what does REI do, nothing.
I got tired of small tents, especially when it rains and you're stuck inside. We're 2 slim, athletic people with a medium-sized dog, and a 2-person tent became claustrophobic the last time out when we had to shelter inside from 5p onward because of heavy rain. So I upgraded to this glorious tent. It is absolutely amazing. Half of it I kept for sleeping, and the other half as a living room. I bought REI's fleece mat for the floor, their adjustable long table (kept at the lowest height) for storage, and the low bamboo table for card games. There are so many little pockets and smart touches that the interior is excellent. It didn't rain at all, so I never put up the rainfly (I don't know why so many people automatically put the rainfly up when there's no rain in the forecast). And without the rainfly, the experience is incredible. Since it's screened all around, it's like sitting outdoors. And you can stand up fully too. At night, the top is also all screen, so you can see the stars. And in the morning, you wake up to the dappled sunlight through the trees. Setup is actually really easy, though I don't know why tent manufacturers don't crate an online site with Ikea-type instructions for their tents. I watched some videos online on how to set it up, played it through my head, and although we got to our northern MI rustic site as it was getting pretty dark, I was able to set it up in 10 minutes (after staking the footprint). Figuring out which part was the rear (the side with the REI logo) with all the mesh and material (doors should come from the factory zipped up, makes it easier to handle), took the longest. Overall, an elegant tent, beautiful functional design, and a joy to experience.
We spent a full day researching tents for our upcoming adventures, and settled on this one after reading lots of convincing reviews. As we live in Germany, we had to solicit a friend to bring it over as luggage (at which time the airlines lost it, but thankfully we got it back). We were too excited to wait for the next outdoor trip, so we went ahead and put it up in the living room. Looks killer! Very impressed with how easy it was to setup and breakdown, how well the bag is organized, how light it is, and in general all of the little touches. Can't wait to take it for a spin in the real world next.
