Nice Style. Pockets are Cosmetic Only
I like the fit, fabrics and style, but the jacket has a couple major flaws. The front pockets are annoyingly small. Too shallow (just down to the horizontal stitching immediately below the pockets) and too short (5 inches toward the center zipper on the XL). Too small for your hands or even a pair of sunglasses without zipping the pocket to keep them in. The pocket zippers are also too exposed and rake at your wrists and hands. I liked the jacket style enough to ask a tailor's advice on enlarging the pockets (essentially making a bigger "bag" inside the jacket). He didn't have appropriate pocket material, so I just decided to just return the jacket.
Work elbows and random holes after 3 months
I received this from my parents as a gift in December. After 3 months of wear perhaps 3 out of 7 days a week on average, the elbows are worn and holes are appearing in random places for no explicable reason. I sit at a desk all day; I'm not using this jacket for outdoor activities. Unrelated to quality, I love the look and design of this jacket aside except for the really tiny front pockets and the pocket's sharp, uncomfortable zippers. Compared to the years I get out of a Carhart (which is admittedly a bulkier jacket), this seemingly rad jacket is really disappointing.
Great Jacket
This is yet another great product created by Kuhl. It is warm, durable, and comfortable. It also fits well and is a nice looking jacket. Living in Minnesota, if I was going to be outside in January for extended periods of time, I would wear a heavier jacket. However, in the spring, fall, and some of winter it is a great option. I personally think it is comfortable until probably somewhere around 30 degrees. If I was planning to be outside for an extended period of time below that, I would probably go for a heaver jacket. Even in the heart of winter though, I will probably still use it if I am just running errands or going to and from the car & house.
Really like the look - zippers are sharp
I really like the look of this jacket (so do my wife and two teen kids) - it's a lot like a motorcycle-style leather jacket. The espresso color was the one I picked after trying it and comparing it to the gun metal color. The contrasting stitching is a stand-out element of the style. I thought the jacket was too 'new' looking, though, so as soon as I got home, I 'aged' it by beating/whipping it across my older concrete driveway for a few minutes (I often amuse my neighbors). I held each sleeve, then both sleeves, then the collar, then the bottom hem, etc. and whipped/dragged the jacket front/back/sides/shoulders across the rough concrete several times (though not too much - the fabric/finish is more fragile than you might think). It looked great to start with but is MUCH better now in my view - some roughed edges and fading, especially at the top edge around the collar, the cuffs and bottom hems (I added pictures to the review). DISCLAIMER - I am not afraid to do this type of thing to my brand new clothing but some people are REALLY bothered by it or find it upsetting. If you're even slightly unsure, just wear the jacket 'as is' and let it age naturally, over time/use. Several reviews indicated the sizing was a bit small (which is why I went to the store to try it on). I consider the jacket sizing is like a 'fitted' item (sorta like 'slim fit' jeans) not like many 'coats' or outer wear that allow for extra room. The Large size was right for me (5'-10" - 185) and the sleeves were the right length. The XL was a bit roomier - but the sleeves were too long, so I went with the Large. It isn't an 'over-coat' type of jacket; I wear shirts and Kuhl fleece (which is thinner fleece) shirts under it and it's not too bulky or tight. I wore it over a thick hooded sweat-shirt and it was acceptable - but barely. The zippers are high quality but the 'teeth' on them are scrape'y and may scratch your hands, your phone - or your surroundings - such as a shoulder satchel as you carry it or the leather steering wheel, seats, or arm rests in your car. Also, other reviews indicate that the pockets are very small. I agree that the hand pockets are not very big to hold 'stuff' but they are lined and my large hands fit in them as fists; I treat them as hand-warmers. My cell phone fits fine in the outside chest pocket (Samsung S22+). The inside chest pocket is much larger than the other pockets. I am very happy w/ the jacket - I hope this review helps others.
Stylish spring or fall jacket
After buying several jackets online and eventually returning them, I decided to fork over the extra dough and buy this jacket. It's well made and is very comfortable. I'd say its best as a spring or fall jacket depending. It has an athletic cut slightly tapered at the waistline, so if you have a bit of a gut get a bigger size or think of another jacket. I'm 6'0, 195lb, and a 34" waist, the L fits perfectly for thin shirts or t-shirt underneath. If you wanted to wear bulky sweat-shirts or sweaters, I'd suggest an XL. The only minor concern is the pockets could be a bit deeper in my opinion.
Great jacket marred by insufficient pockets
I bought this jacket to use as an outer layer for walking and casual cycling. The shell material is nice to the touch, rugged, and looks good. The insulation looks like it will be warm (winter has yet to arrive). The overall quality of workmanship is good. HowEVER, I have never seen a jacket with such small pockets! The side pockets are so small my hands won't fit in them all the way, and I don't have large hands. The breast pocket is likewise very small, My iPhone SE (2020) barely fits in the side pockets and the breast pockets (one internal, one external). Based on its strengths, I am recommending it, but only if you don't like to put your hands in the jacket pockets or carry much in them.
Great Craftsmanship
I looked at the Kuhl Men's Burr Jacket in store and purchased it online due to the fact that my local REI store didn't have my size (which is medium). Fortunately, REI offered free delivery on the item at the time I purchased it so I had no problem waiting for it. Overall, it appears the jacket will be excellent for for fall and spring Minnesota weather due to the fact that it is not heavily insulated, which is what I was looking for. The jacket looks rugged and appears that it will last a long time. I really like the details of the jacket such as the contrasting stitching, metal zippers and fleece-lined pockets. An added bonus is that it fits excellent when it can be sometimes difficult to find one that fits my arm length. I'm very satisfied with this purchase.
This jacket is a steal
I got this coat on sale and I like it so much I immediately got another in a different color. I'm 5'10 and 175 kind of burly (usually I'm between medium and large) so I got a large because it has an athletic fit. The cut and stitching are top notch and the lining is super comfortable it looks and feels much more expensive than it is. It's a nice medium weight for fall and spring but has eough room for a sturdy layer when the temp drops To get two of these for $160 (what i easily would have paid for one jacket i really like) feels like thievery
Rugged and stylish
I've worn this jacket off and on this winter so far. I really like the style and it feels very good to wear. I am pretty picky about fit so I have a couple of nit picks but nothing that was a deal breaker for me. TL;DR: Good: Strong zippers High quality stitching High quality materials Jacket is warm and layers well Bad: Small pockets Not very long Things to be aware of: Canvas means limited range of motion (Canvas doesn't stretch) I am 5'10", 165 pounds and normally wear size medium but sometimes mediums are too short so I ended up getting this in Large and I'm glad I did. Despite being a large it's still a bit shorter than my other jackets. The jacket doesn't quite cover the tops of my pockets, I usually prefer jackets that cover the tops of my pockets by an inch or two, this may not be the case for everyone. Inside the jacket is pretty roomy, it could be worn as a shell over a long sleeve or lighter jacket easily. It's warm enough for me to wear it alone when it's above freezing, but it's not particularly thick especially in the arms so if you are cold natured you'll probably want something under it. The material of the outer shell is canvas, so it holds up to wear pretty well. The edges of the sleeves fray some but that's to be expected with the material. Because the jacket is made from canvas it doesn't really stretch, the jackets design allows for a really good range of motion for a canvas jacket but thats still a lot less than a than a jacket made from a soft material. The interior is lined with fleece and stays toasty warm. The arms lined with nylon so they stay a good bit cooler but the material is smooth and doesn't catch on dry skin etc. The zippers are really nice. All of the pockets are lined with fleece so they are warm for hands, but they aren't big enough to fit my phone (Samsung Note 9, so it's a large phone but my other jackets don't have this problem).
Great jacket
I've owned this jacket for a little over a year now and have enjoyed it. As others have mentioned, the pockets are awkwardly/annoyingly small. Hasn't been that big of a deal for me, though. I definitely have not found it to provide much warmth, but it works great on a cool fall/spring day. I would not wear it out in mid-winter weather unless I had some good warmth layering (e.g. fleece) underneath. It also works great for wind and light rain defense. Size-wise, it is more of a slim fit so it may feel a little tighter than what you may expect, but I believe it's true to size from a slim fit perspective. The sleeves were a bit longer than I expected, but it hasn't been anything intolerable.
