Simple and rugged
Very sturdy and able to handle BC conditions well. Little heavier and chunkier than more groomed track oriented ones. Not push pole release but a simple look will tell you that. I have put about 50 hours of mixed terrain skiing on them so far. Clip in does require reaching down and isn’t difficult if it’s in the fully open position-up and forward, not just up. Once one they hold very well. I broke through a thin spot on a bog, skis completely under water up to knees. Climbed out and skied on for 45 minutes to get back. Bindings held superbly, still released when I had to clean skis and relatched even soaked and snow packed. Really like them so far
Great "in-between" BC binding
I have an earlier version of these on another pair of skis. Put these on my metal edge touring skis that I use for more challenging touring center trails, as well as non-tellie backcountry terrain. These are not for serious backcountry downhill tellie skiing. They work great with the right skis and boots for those "in between" ski days. You can use them, of course for in-track skiing too. The manual clamp can be a pain, but it is very secure and I think preferable to step in.
Great bindings with one minor flaw.
The new Magnum bindings are solid bindings to tackle some nice slopes and turns. They re not for a downhill resort and not meant to be. For the right terrain they are a nice mid-range binding with acceptable kick and glide with some downhill capability. I prefer the manual binding over the step-in for the more secure attachment to the ski. The part of the hooks that come over the boot pin are a little too long for me and allow some side to side movement of the heel besides being quite hard to engage. I grind off a small amount of metal from the forward top part of the hooks checking to see when the boot's side swing is pretty much gone. The boot will still kick easily and be even more responsive to turning input. If you are not sure about doing something like this yourself, try the bindings while skiing to see if you can tell if the boots are not a solid connection. If you aren't proficient with tools and really want this done you might consider have someone do it for you. All that said these bindings are well engineered and worth the expense wit the one minor short coming.
REI will make them better!
These bindings came as a package on cross country skies I bought from REI in Bend OR in April 2021. For a variety of reasons, I never used them until now - on a trip to an Alaska! I was having trouble "testing" the bindings on a towel at home and after reading the reviews, I was quite worried. I called REI and was told to bring them in - they knew of the issue and could tweak the bindings. The REI in Las Vegas (home) did not have a ski shop, so they could not do it. But the Anchorage AK REI was very familiar with the binding issues and had them fixed within an hour! The service was fantastic and my bindings now work great - no sticking or difficulty getting in or out. VERY VERY happy with the fix (they shaved the binding where the rod inserts) from REI Anchorage! And now, love my skis and bindings. I gave 4 stars because of the needed fix; if then hadn't been fixed, would have rated as a 1 or 2. After fixing - all of a 5!
Reliable - avoid the auto version of this binding
I had a recent purchase of a pair of the step-in auto bindings that were not working - either wouldn’t attach or semi-attached and the popped. I have 3 other sets of the auto-binding that work great, but they were bought years ago. The REI techs tried to fix them, but no improvement. I swapped them out for these manual bindings. Yes you have to bend down to lock and unlock them, but they are very secure and reliable. Given the QC with the auto version of this binding, I would only recommend this version (Magnum) of the NNN-BC binding at the moment.
New life for older skis.
These are new bindings and may break in a bit. Right now the open/close mechanism is very stiff and not easy to use. But I have only used them a few times, the mechanism may become a bit easier to use as it wears in. That said, they replaced some three pin bindings and are worlds better.
Auto version are horrible… wonder if can swap out
The auto version of these bindings are worthless. At the sight of snow the spring freezes and it won’t lock. Wondering if I can swap out auto version for the manual latch?
Difficult to secure and open
These bindings SUCK. It's impossible to get them secured on first try - and you have to bend down and use your hands to open them. They don't allow for utilization of the ski pole for closure or release. HATE THEM. Big mistake.
Nope
I must concur that these suck. Extremely difficult to lock-in. Moreover the latch has sharp edges, create a risk for tearing glove or cutting one’s fingers. An embarrassment for the businesses involved.
Reliable, stable and heavy duty
Excellent product, very reliable, stable and heavy duty. Boot availability great and warmer compared to regular NNN boots. The Boots for this binding are good for making camp, gathering firewood in the snow. RIP: Salomon SNS BC
