Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great on shoes and boots Used these on the Franconia Ridge Trail. Large size fit fine over EU size 47 (US 12.5) Zamberlan heavy leather boots. Plenty of traction on treacherous icy trail. Points held up well even after walking miles on bare rock. Took off boots for stream crossing on Falling Waters Trail and put spikes on US size 13 Merrill minimalist/barefoot shoes and they still fit fine and gripped submerged stepping stones. Fold compactly; take very little space in pack. Sticky elastomer harness grips shoe w/o slipping. Much prefer this black color to the magenta that Kahtoola calls red. In summary, well-designed product that works great. (Probably high margin, too!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Go ahead and "bite" right in Bought these for my late season (October) hike up Gray's Peak, the highest point along the Continental Divide in NA. There was snow pack and ice from the daily thaw/freeze cycle for about 75% of the climb. These worked wonders, tremendous stability and lots of compliments for thinking to bring them. Many others on the trail were sliding and falling. As soon as you take a step, you can feel them bite right in. L was a perfect fit on my size 13 TNF Hedgehogs. I could feel them get a little slick in slush, but not bad--just not as planted as on snow or ice. I didn't feel as stable on dry rock patches, as if they weren't centered perfectly on my foot. But that's really not what they are for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mini Crampons! These micro spikes are the best on the market. We tried the competitor's (ICEtrekkers) and they lack the gripping bite Kahtoola has. The competitor traction is actually like stepping on a floor of marbles sometimes as they roll under your feet. This is impossible with Kahtoola, since they are protruding spikes, not rounded "diamonds." Yak tracks and ICEtrekkers can do the trick when going for a nice walk or rolling terrain, but when it really counts in steeper, icier conditions, Kahtoola's got your back--or should I say, "foot"? If you are a serious hiker in need of the winter traction for a trail that requires in between a boot and a snowshoe, this is the durable and effective choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hikes Like a Dream I wore these yesterday hiking the Lion's Head trail up Mount Washington. These performed magnificently. The majority of the hike was snow-covered; and whether hiking over dry rocks, wet rocks, packed snow, crusted frozen snow, mud, or ice-covered rocks- I cruised the whole way and never felt unstable. These paired with trekking poles were perfect. I wear a women's 8.5 trail shoe, and the smalls fit perfectly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but maybe not for east coast wet snow Wore these on a mountain hiking excursion in West Virginia. They worked great traction wise...however, with the wet snow of the east coast, it just clogged up in the spikes and made it extremely uncomfortable to walk as well as doubling the amount of weight on my feet (maybe more, my boots are pretty light). I only wore them for a few hours then took them off because my feet were becoming fatigued stomping on ice clumps. Thinking about returning, or may just hold on top them for my west coast adventures....still up in the air on this. They fit my boots well, and worked when on ice, but man the clumping issue with the snow was pretty disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Product Ever! I went hiking in Yosemite over New Year's weekend. There was snow and ice covering most trails. While other people were slipping and sliding both up and down the trails, I was able to walk by as if strolling in the park. I didn't slip once. I was stopped more than once by other hikers who wanted to see what I had on my boots. Trying to hike without any traction device would have been miserable. I admit I was tempted to get a cheaper alternative, but am completely satisfied that I went with MICROspikes! This definitely encourages me to go on more winter adventures.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rubber defective, straps snap We've had a couple pairs of Kahtoola Microspikes for over 15 years, trekked in snow, mud, ice, all terrains in Alaska. Same with several friends. So, I know the old product very well and always swore by them. In December 2016 I decided to get another pair for guests, and found this new "improved" model at REI. The first time I put it on, the rubber strap on one snapped (sz medium microspike on a sz 9 hiking shoe). I was dismayed and noticed the rubber wasn't nearly the quality of my old microspikes. I picked up the other new microspike, tugged it in a couple spots, and it too snapped. (At 135 lbs, it's not like I'm a gorilla.) This month, January 2017, I bought 2 more pairs, hoping it was an isolated problem. BOTH of these new pairs I bought snapped--indoors, while putting them on. That's 0 for 3, Kahtoola. If the new improved version is this delicate, I want nothing to do with them. Just be clear, not one of these 3 pairs made it out of my house; it's not like I used them in challenging terrain. BTW, when I returned them to Anchorage REI and told them what was going on, the returns people said, "Yes, we know, almost all of these that are coming back are for breakage. Hang on to your old ones!" Good advice until Kahtoola gets this right. And I hope they do, because it used to be a great product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very sturdy and strong I do love these trekkers as they are so sturdy and strong. I'm on my second year using them. This year they have started collecting huge chunks of snow/ice when I'm walking on packed trails. Uncertain what the issue is, my husband thought the different rubber in my boots as he has no trouble. I've tried three different pair of hiking boots this season. The trekkers get the huge clods of ice/snow with all three pairs of boots. Today, I couldn't go more than 10 yards without knocking off the ice. Disappointed.

what is better for a runner Kahtoola microspike or Kahtoola nano?

Asked by: Minni
The MICROspikes Traction System will likely be a bit much for a runner wearing traditional road or trail running sneakers. The NANOspikes would be a better choice in that instance.

I wear a Vasque women's mid height boot in size 11 and a Columbia men's mid height boot in size 9.  I purchased a size Medium in microspikes, which is the recommended size, but seems snug.  Should it fit snugly or should I try a large?

Asked by: Maryow
These microspikes are designed to fit snugly to ensure your boot does not slip in them.

A previous reviewer said he had three Kahtoola MicroSpikes "snap" while being placed on shoes. He said REI reported many similar problems upon return for refund. It is March 2017: is this still an ongoing issue?

Asked by: Robnew72
We have received very few returns of this product and normally it is because the wrong size was purchased. This is one of the best traction devices we offer in terms of durability and performance.

So, has Kahtoola fixed the problem “Mike in Mtns” has encountered, with them breaking on first use…?

Asked by: doug_72
Kahtoola has not made any updates to these MICROspikes since the review you are referring to. Although there are some reports of the straps breaking, we have not heard overwhelming feedback that they break too easily and most customers do not encounter this issue.
