My BEST Gloves
First trial was a trip to Squaw/Alpine Meadows in mid March. Temp range was low twenties to low thirties with 105 inches of snow in 5 days. My hands were comfortable the entire time. No cold hands ...I've bought "good quality" gloves in the past but my hands always tend to get cold. Normally wear a medium but had to go to a large. My hand measurement was on the border according to the size chart. By removing the liners each evening I was able to have totally dry gloves the next morning. I did not have a problem reinserting the liners. I found it was by far the best to start by putting the liner on my hand and inserting the "pinky" and second finger first.
Great gloves!
Purchased these as a gift for a life-long skier who has tried multiple gloves over the years and always seems to wind up with frozen fingers. Happy to report that they were worn for 5 ski days on a recent trip to Whistler and did not disappoint! Fingers stayed warm and dry even in wet snow conditions. His one critique was that the lining removes easily- which is great for drying, but when trying to just pull hand out for a second on the slopes, liner tended to twist/flip fingers inside out on removal. Made putting them back on a little more of a chore but ultimately worth it for the warmth and quality!
Seriously Good Gloves
I use these gloves for high-altitude, multi-day trekking. My hands run cold, and they seriously outperform all other gloves I have tried and even some mitts. Some reviews here have complained about fit and warmth. First warmth. They are seriously warm, but they need to be broken in. I wish everyone who tried them one day and returned them would have given them a few more days to let the wool 'bed-in'. Now sizing. Do note that they fit 'snugly'. Consider moving up if you are near the top end of a size. Also, use the Black Diamond website for sizing. The REI 'length' chart could give you gloves that are too small.
Warmest gloves? Not even close.
The gloves are nice but don’t buy them if you are truly looking for gloves that will keep your hands warm in temps lower than 20F. I bought them before a mid-January 2022 long ski road trip in UT, WY and MT. In WY and MT we skied in temps as low as -10F in the morning with daytime highs no more than 10F. These gloves couldn’t keep my hands warm in those temps even with hand warmers. I had to buy a pair of Hestra mittens at one of the resorts and those worked much much better than these gloves. I would only recommend buying these gloves if you plan to use them in temps of 20F or higher and only if you have an extra $180 burning a hole in your pocket.
Second Pair
After 6 seasons of 40 days, give or take, of resort, backcountry, billygoating abuse (I drag my hand a lot while riding) I bought a new pair. The only reason was that with the dividend it was cheaper to buy a new pair than fix these. They have seen -21F*, 40mph wind days along the continental divide. Worth every penny.
Great so far
I got the Size Medium after checking against the Black Diamond fit chart. A lot of people have remarked that these fit "small". I didn't find that to be the case. Snug, but not tight, and the liners have already packed out a bit and they fit great now. As for the gloves - well made, bombproof, leather resists water after using the included Niwax, very warm (albeit spring skiing conditions), removeable liners make drying easy. No leashes, but there are loops on the inside of the cuffs that you could employ to fashion your own.
Warm, but not very durable
Bought these 3/19. It's now 1/20. I have been snowboarding in them roughly 20 times since I purchased them, and not used them for anything else. The middle and ring finger are used to strap my right binding in when getting off the lift and the leather on the finger tips has completely worn thru. I'm not that rough with them, so I'm fairly disappointed they can't handle a whole season. I coated them with some shoe goo, and they'll probably work fine, but just annoyed $160 gloves come with such thin, weak finger tips. Otherwise, my hands have been warm down to 15°F. Below that, you need solid liners.
A touch bulky for technical ice.
So close to perfect. Bought these for technical ice climbing. Used them in temperatures as low as -20 fahrenheit. They are durable, warm, and comfortable. Unfortunately I found them to be too bulky to manipulate carabiner gates and ice screws. For general mountaineering, snowshoeing, skiing or just dealing with extreme cold these outperform all other gloves I have tried.
I wanted to like these
I previously had a pair of black diamond mittens that were amazing. I bought them back in 2010 or so and they lasted a decade of mild to moderate use (nothing heavy duty), so I thought that these guide gloves would do the same thing but they do not. Despite these having an inner liner my hands are cold when the temps are below 25 degrees which just doesn't work when skiing. I bought these in 2022 before the ski season and used them for 7 or 8 days in the 22/23 season and then 8 days in the 23/24 season and they're just not any good. I'm out of the return window, so I'm out $150 or so. I'll be looking into something different for the next season
Dangerously Unreliable Gloves
Purchased these for an expedition to Denali and found them to be borderline unusable. Something in the shell shrinks when the gloves are cold to the point where I could not get my pinkies fully in even when pulling as hard as I could. Only after wearing the gloves for 30-60 minutes would they get warm and stretch out enough to insert my hands fully. I even tried taking the liners out of the shell to start and still wasn't successful. This has to be a manufacturing defect of some sorts and I hope Black Diamond becomes aware of it because this is how bad situations happen.
