Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than expected.. Some complaints about this bag is that it's missing two handle straps that allow you to carry the bag like a conventional duffel bag. I have both versions of this bag and loaded them up. I was expecting the newer bag to preform poorly, however, the side handle balances out the load better than when it had the two straps that went over the bag (sorry if this is confusing). If you're thinking about this bag, try to load it up in the store with the bags they use for backpacking backpacks. Overall, I really like the design of this bag. The removal of the handle straps makes the bag more streamlined and simple. I'm happy!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Why did you remove the carry handles? I've been the happy owner of a TNF duffel for many years - Fantastic duffel bag! But I recently ordered a new one as supplement, and realized that you on the new model for some reason have removed the two carry handles in the sides, which means that it is has become very difficult to carry the bag by hand. OK, I admit, the shoulder straps are improved - but that does not make it up for the loss of carry handles... Seems to me, you have turned your world-class duffel into a not too successful mix between a travel bag and a backpack. I've now returned the bag, and will try to look for an old model (or another brand) instead. Any change we can get the carry handles back?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from New & Unimproved I had the old style Base Camp Duffel until someone smashed my truck window and stole it. I used it daily as a duffel for my workout gear. So I purchased a new one, not knowing The North Face had changed the design. This is a duffel bag right? Where are the handles? I would have been happy with a single shoulder strap centered on the bag, nope. The only way to carry this is using the backpack straps. The old style duffle had handles that met in the middle of the bag so you could carry it like a duffle. There is no way to do that now. I will be returning this one and trying to find an old style bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Own all the sizes! I love this bag. I started by buying the medium size and fell in love with it. I've gone on to buy every size North Face carries. This bag as seen the world with me multiple times over, including rainstorms in Thailand. I have yet to have trouble with the waterproofing. If anything, I've had a few holes burned into the fabric from being dragged around by airport baggage handlers. The holes have never burned RIGHT THROUGH, but I have spots where the fabric is worn thin. I used patches from a wet suit repair kit to cover the holes and it's like new again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All the superlatives I heard were true People told me these bags are bombproof, they are the last duffels you ever need to buy etc. etc. I got mine, a large one, and it turned out all those adjectives were true. The bag sometimes looks a bit miserable when it comes out at the airport, dirty and oily. If it's too bad, I throw it under shower in the night place and it's all shiny again. If you really soak, it some water will get in, but never had any problems with this shower wash, all gear inside of course. It has got some scratches along the way, some 10 flights by now, but nothing that would make any difference to it's durability. The size of the large duffel is good for long trips during warmer periods, for extreme winter and climbing gear I will get the XL one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Duffel Bag I've Purchased This is one great bag! It's tough and indestructible. I bought the large and was surprised at how much I was able to fit into it. Several pairs of shirts and shorts, a couple sweatshirts, jeans, shoes, two large beach towels, laptop, toiletries and still had more room! Plenty of room for a trip of a week or more. I got the krypton green, love the bright color and it will stand out in baggage claim. Planning on some overseas trips and it will work great as well as camping trips. I'm going to get a matching small bag for a carry-on and overnight trips. My friend liked my bag so much I'm going to get her a couple as well in pink! At least we'll look great traveling with our North Face bags!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from TNF, What were you thinking!?? I have two and I need more. I can't believe that you have removed the longer side handles. This makes the bag useless for carrying large, heavy loads. I have no idea who you surveyed before making this change to a classic, essential piece of gear. Just hang out at an airport any place with mountains and the choice is clear. Please fix this. In the mean time, I'll be looking for an older version. If you have one, please direct me to the place to buy it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome Product I got this bag to backpack with, when I say backpack I mean like from the train to the hotel, not to have on my back for hours upon hours. It is awesome. It is really light and the main compartment is really roomy, I fit a weeks worth of clothes and my snowboard, camera and climbing gear in it with no problem, the synch straps on the outside are awesome for a water bottle attachment and really easy to store a tripod as well. The only problem I have really found is the straps on top make it hard to open the bag when it is full but with a little patience it is not bad, just adjust them to be bigger first. The bag has also proven to be waterproof and a little bit flame resistant, please don't ask how. I will probably be using for at least 10 years. Totally worth the investment.

What is the size of the opening? Large enough to wiggle an unloaded internal frame pack into, say a 60L?

Asked by: Adam
The opening is 18 x 12 inches.
