Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective New Design My wife and I loved the older OPSAKs that had the single seal. There was never a failure. Unfortunately, they changed the design to one that now has two seals. My wife and I purchased more than 8 of these bags for a 113.9 mi., 15-day backpacking trip and experienced problems on more than 50% of the bags with the seam between the clear plastic and the black plastic failing and blowing out just under the lower seal and this occurred in various locations along this seam on many different bags which is clearly a manufacturing issue. We were fortunate to not be in true bear country. Prior to this redesign, we NEVER experienced any issues with the OPSAK.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kept our stuff safe from the bear's nose! We were hiking in Colorado and our campsite didn't have a good place to hang a bear bag. We hung it, but only about 5 feet off of the ground. We were hanging food in these opsaks inside of our sleeping bag stuff sacks. Well, a bear DID come loudly sniffing and grunting around the campsite. He never even turned toward our bear sacks. I'm sure if we had just used ziplock bags he would have known where to find all of our foods. The opsak saved the trip! (Luckily he didn't bother us, either!) By the way, we used the larger bags for the food. These smaller ones were helpful for toiletries and the first aid kit...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from First night out rodents went right for it. Used the Opsak on recent hike. Placed sealed Mountain Packs in the OPSAK then in the bear bag. In morning, when we retrieved the bear bag we found a rodent had chewed right thru the "odor-proof" opsak and in the seal Mountain House food packs.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from For $5/bag, what do you expect? I bought these as a way to carry my dog's used poo bags. For that purpose, they're perfect. They keep the smell from seeping through and stinking up my pack, which is good. They don't last forever, though. The first one gave out after about a dozen hikes. It gave out by the plastic above the seal tearing off, making it harder to open, but still perfectly usable.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ziplock brand are probably better The bags themselves are thick and look very durable, but the seal sucks. I put some freeze dried food in one of the bags, and it did not stay sealed. In the end I could squeeze the bag and the remaining air escaped through the top. I wouldn't trust this on a backpack adventure or even some hiking situations. Sorry, it's just not good.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Should be renamed the OopsSak! Picked these bags up for a backcountry camp in the Smokies. Hung my pack with a Loksak full of food on the provided bear cables, and the next morning I found that a rodent had climbed down the cable and chewed a hole through my backpack and the OPSAK and right into a bag of peanuts. Needless to say, these bags are worthless.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ridiculous Item These bags do not hold up to use. A simple Glad or Ziploc works perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Food Bags I use these in the small and large sizes for all of my food storage. They live up to the billing. No smell and water tight. They are part of my food plan used with the Ursack. Never have had an issue with these tough bags.. certainly reliable.

Are the bags rodent-proof? If not, what do you recommend to stop rodents when hanging the bag?

Asked by: Bignose
They are not rodent proof. I bought them, put them in stuff sack and hung them on the bear cables only to find the next morning rodents had chewed right thru the OPSAK into Mountain House packs.
