Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth the money I took two of these on a trip to bear country. One for trash one for food. This is gross but here goes. I got a serious case of altitude sickness. I had to choose between vomiting right outside my tent, or in my trash LOPSAK bag. I chose the bag. I was too under the weather to hang this so I took the risk of keeping it in my tent. Not only could i not smell the vomit from the bag that was literally 2 feet away, the bears most importantly could not either. Huge volume bags, waterproof, puke proof, and smell proof.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kept our food safe from the bear's nose We were hiking in Colorado and our campsite didn't have a good place to hang a bear bag. We hung it, but only about 5 feet off of the ground. We were hanging food in these opsaks inside of our sleeping bag stuff sacks. Well, a bear DID come loudly sniffing and grunting around the campsite. He never even turned toward our bear sacks. I'm sure if we had just used ziplock bags he would have known where to find all of our foods. The opsak saved the trip! (Luckily he didn't bother us, either!)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Like these Used these for a month on the AT last spring. Never had a mouse chew my food or a bear go for it. Doesn't prove anything but that is my experience. I was careful with the ziploc and the bag and believe they are still odor proof after use. If you want they to stay odor free must be very careful where you place them. If put on a well-used picnic table the outside will pick up odors. They are showing wear and I am buying new ones for this year's hike. Need two (21"x12") for 1 person's food, stove, pot, mug and toiletries.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from nice for inserting into bear bag Used these for my 2015 AT thru-hike and used them within a Sea-to-summit stuff sack as my bear bag. Went through two bags total. Only had one bear try to grab my food but luckily I had my bag hung high enough. These bags work great and act to water proof your food as well. The black seal on top broke on both after about a month of use but I was still able to use the bag and just roll the top over. I intend to use them again for my PCT hike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loksak Bag fan These are excellent. I've used the 21" for two years. I have one for all my fresh food and one for my garbage; I use for day hikes, overnighters and "long distance." Last year around Mt Rainier and this year 80+ miles in the Wind River Range. It fits perfectly inside my Ursak bear bag which I can tie at standing height or wedge under rocks (above tree line or at scrub) and never an issue. Keeps the chipmunks away, which are a bigger problem in the NW than are bears!! Too bad REI doesn't seem to have a supply any more. I've been in 6 stores in the last 2 weeks and on-line and they don't have the large size...are they discontinued?? I've thrown away the old ones just to freshen up and until I get replacements I'm very scared :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bear bags We use these for backpacking in AK and keeping the food smell from tempting bears. The ziplock part can be tricky sometimes but I've always gotten them shut. We've never had a bear get our food and we've definitely encountered them while out. They do wear out eventually but ours lasted us for at least one summer season of 2-3 trips a month.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great food storage bag I use the Loksak in combination with an Ursack. The bags I purchased last year are still holding up. You can tell the odor-proofing is real, because when you open up the sealed bag, all the smells of your food hit you at once.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Passed initial test I performed the following experiment prior to spring hiking. I placed GORP made with almonds and raisins in the bag and sealed it shut. It was left it outside in suburbia for 2 days and nights and the local population of squirrels and chipmunks (mini bears) did not attempt to chew through the sealed bag. Take care that the exterior of the bag doesn't have any food residue on it that would attract mini bears.

How many times can these bags be used before they no longer seal properly?

Asked by: LunarWolf
I have used various sizes of these LokSaks and, depending on how they are used, can last for months with daily openings and closings. Under rough use or incautious handling, they won't last as long. With care I'm still using several I purchased at least two years ago.

What is the actual, usable volume of this sack, when sealed?

Asked by: Gnossos
I use this size with 5 days worth of food as a liner in my food bag. It works well. I hope this report helps.

Are these necessary to use with a bear canister?

Asked by: LakerFan24
The Opsaks are a great, preventive tool to use in tandem to a bear canister, to keep bears away from your campsite, or to keep away small critters where a canister is not necessary.
