Good poles here. They are very sturdy and put up with what I felt to be some serious pounding as I climbed and descended some hills. The foam grips are comfortable and sweat didn't seem to affect that. What I don't like about these is the strap adjustment is a little cumbersome but once I got it perfect I didn't have to mess with them again. I also don't like the twist-lock method of adjusting the length of the poles. It is somewhat time consuming and I have to find the "sweet spot" between too tight and too loose in order to slide the poles to the desired length. Last on my rant is the top of the handles are flat, hard plastic that make palming the poles less ergonomic and comfortable.

Good Solid Poles

I like these poles. I have used them on over a dozen hikes now and they have served me well. I did have an issue when I got sand in the tubes and they jammed up but the helpful folks at REI in Huntington Beach, CA were able to get them apart and gave me some spare parts from the scrap heap. After these repairs they work like new. There is also an issue where the spring mechanism gets locked out because of twisting during normal use. Not a deal breaker but a minor annoyance. Overall, I would recommend these, especially if you are unsure of whether or not you want to use trekking poles. Can't beat the price. Minus one star for spring lock out annoyance.

Great for the price!

After spending a half hour with an awesome REI employee I decided on these trekking poles due to the shock feature. I really like the ability to either have shocks or no shocks. These fall short 1 star due to the twist lock feature of the length and the shock mechanism. Several times I have accidently kicked the baskets a few too many times and ended up collapsing the poles mid hike. Also you will find the shock sometimes locks itself out so I find myself check the shock multiple times on a hike. I would prefer a clamp lock on the adjustment and a lockout feature like Leki uses for the shock. So far the handles are comfortable although I would have prefered a nice cork. For the price you can't beat this set of trekking poles.

Improve your balance

This is actually my first set of trekking poles. I've seen people use them and thought, "Why would anyone need those?" After years of having bad knees, I finally bought this set. I couldn't believe how much difference it made with my balance and ease of hiking. I was actually navigating obstacles more quickly and efficiently with them. The only problem I had was that a couple of times one of the tubes collapsed on me. That could have been my fault though as I may not have had them tight enough.

Broke during my first use

Received for Christmas, used for the first time in the Narrows and was disappointed afterwards to find the locking mechanism broken and paint smearing. Thankfully returned them to find an external locking mechanism in hopes of not having the same issues! Nice pole I guess, if you never use near water ...

Springy poles!

The bounce from the shock spring is perfect. I would give these 5/5 if they had clamp locks instead of twist locks. The grips are durable and comfortable. Baskets stay put. People frequently ask me why I like springy poles. The only answer is that I like springy poles. Apparently I'm the only Earthling that does. I fully expect REI to take these away, so I should probably buy a second pair. I found one other pair that are shock poles, but at double the price of these, I would feel like a moron for buying them.

Good solid poles; they've served me well

my wife and I have used these poles extensively on numerous day and backpacking trips; they are still going strong. One of the poles seems to sometimes lock while in the collapsed position, making it difficult to extend at times. I've figured it out though. They can collapse if you put a ton of pressure on them, again; no biggie.

My daughter now has her own trekking poles!

My wife and I both use trekking poles and my daughter kept borrowing them on her backpack trips. If these work as well as ours, it should be great!

Better poles available

This is good poles, and I have bought two pairs of them. They work really hard for you. However, there are better poles out there that lasts longer than these. Having lived with other poles, I would prefer a external locking mechanism over these twist lock types.
