Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome, long-lasting product I've had my North Face Recon backpack for more than ten years and it's still going strong with near-daily use. It's been filled with textbooks, hiking gear, food from the grocery store, and lots more. It's been shoved in overhead compartments, thrown in the trunks of many cars, and set down in nature more times that I can count. I just logged on to the site to see if they still made it in case I ever need a new one -- glad to see they do, with very minor changes! I doubt I'll need a replacement in the next ten years, but happy to see it's available. I love, love, love my NF recon. Highly recommended. Great size, great quality. All around awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect bag I am a student and i have had this bag for 5 years. I got it before i started 6th grade and now i'm about to become a sophomore. The bag has held up perfectly and it shows no sign of wearing out. It fits all of my books, folders, binders, and pencils just fine with room for other little things. So space isn't a problem. I have also used this bag for travel and it fits a couple pairs of clothes and is very easy for air plane travel. This bag is also good for hikes because it has so much room. The front pouch is very useful as i use it frequently. Overall this is the perfect bag for, a student, traveler, hiker, adventurer, and for city traveling. I highly recommend this backpack!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The everyday pack This is the pack you will use every day. At 31L, you have enough space to carry lunch, communication equipment, first aid, 15" laptop, and anything else you can stuff inside it's large compartment. The first smaller panel has a variety of pouches, pockets and nets that keep everything organized from tablets to multi tools. The outside net is perfect for stashing quick access items and large enough to keep them secure. The one thing I would love to see on these packs are deployable rain covers across the whole line. I would definitely recommend this pack and others from TNF.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great backpack This backpack is everything I was looking for. It holds my 32oz water bottle securely, my 17" laptop (a little snug, but it works!), an extra pair of shoes, and all my other stuff that I find myself needing on a daily basis. I use it mostly for commuting/school, but have also taken it on day hikes and it's so comfortable, even when I have it filled to the brim. I also use this backpack while a passenger on my partner's motorcycle, and I like to think the bright yellow color draws more attention to us so that other drivers take more notice. And I know it doesn't say that it's waterproof, but I got caught i n a huge Texas summer storm recently while waiting for the bus, and everything inside was dry, dry, dry. That was a wonderful surprise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pack I've had this backpack since 2008. Its my Go To. Take it with me to school every day and now I bring it to work with me. I bring it hiking and have even skied with it a few times. Its built real well. TNF doesn't mess around. I'm not sure if its water-proof but I've never had a problem with things getting wet. only 2 things have broken over the life of the pack. The zipper on the small pocket on the front and one of the plastic tightening things for the shoulder straps (nothing a zip tie couldn't fix). Overall extremely happy with the quality of this pack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Recon Backpack I love the new Recon backpack that I ordered from North Face. It is the perfect size to accommodate all of my school materials and has lots of nifty pockets to hold a laptop, water bottle, wallet, and books. When I received the backpack, I found a tag saying that it is certified as a healthy option for your back, although with the amount I carry, I'm sure anything will help my back. I love the simplistic and sophisticated appearance of the bag. However, it is also durable and will be a fitting option to bring for any of my outdoor trips. So glad I choose this North Face brand backpack!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bring back the Value! I was a Recon evangelist having taken this backpack as my only form of luggage across the country, to Europe and South America. It was one of the most bombproof pieces of gear I had ever owned. Recently it was stolen from my vehicle and I ordered a new one with much excitement and anticipation. When it arrived I compared it to my sisters who had the same one I used to. This is where disappointed set in strong. No more drawstring side pocket, no more straps on the bottom to hold jackets or sleeping pads, no more zipper pocket on the inside of the big pocket, the laptop sleeve is not even across the top making it hard to get contents out if you??re not reaching in from the right direction, no more plastic d-rings or knife pocket on the front straps, the front stow pocket??s buckle is now affixed to the front of the backpack reducing capacity and making it harder to buckle. The only change that I see as an improvement is a zippered pocket in the second largest compartment. I immediately searched Recons on eBay and other sites to try and find one like I had bought years ago and it looks as if these changes have been gradual as there are many models between my original and the current, however it seems as though each version has become cheaper and has sacrificed the exact reasons, as small as they may be, that the Recon 5 years ago was a bombproof piece of outdoor or traveling gear that had huge value. I can only hope that this helps to generate discussions to build a better pack like before. Unfortunately, anyone that has bought this pack in the past few years doesn??t know what he or she is missing. If these changes were to be fixed I would certainly become an evangelist again, until then I will remain disappointed and return my new Recon.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good purchase, small issues but happy overall Overall, I'm happy with this purchase. I've had the backpack for a few weeks and used it for a commuting bag to work (business casual environment) and as a daypack for hiking. It suited both purposes well. The waist straps & exit port for the water bladder (think camelback) were big reasons for my purchase of this model. Only drawbacks so far: 1. Main compartment is a little tight due to the fact that they gave the secondary compartment (where tablet and organized pockets is located) more focus. 2. The additional zippered pockets on the backs of other models is missed.

Does anyone know what the difference is between the women's and men's versions of the Recon backpack?  Is it strictly a color thing or are there functional differences?  Thanks!

Asked by: Texas zman
The women's-specific Recon daypack has a shorter suspension system compared to the men's pack. Additionally, the shoulder straps are narrower and contoured with the female form in mind. Function-wise, the two packs are identical.
