loud and scary
At 115dB this whistle is loud. 125dB is the threshold for pain. As to scaring black bears, yes, I've chased two away. They packed up and moved fast. Nothing scares grizzlies. For those who commented on scaring coyotes. Don't bother, they are self scaring.

This whistle whistles with excellence. There is no doubt when you blow into this whistle that it in fact has whistled.

This whistle is called the classic for good reason. It gets the job done, does not require a lot of your breath, and is a good value. This is the best all-around whistle you can buy.
A perfect little whistle for my PFD pocket
This is a perfect little whistle to stuff in my upper PFD pocket. I bought a small locking carabiner and water-resistant cording, also purchased at REI, to tie to the whistle and carabiner to the zipper handle of the pocket below it, so it is easily accessible if needed. Comes with standard instructions on the meaning of one, two or 3 whistle sounds. It would be nice if those were laminated. But then the product would probably not be as inexpensive.

this is a wonderful whistle..my ex and I both carried one and I did go off trail/get lost, it was super easy to find my way back to him by using these whistles. strongly recommend!
This will get some attention
I have had a Fox 40 since 1997 and it is still my go to for my hiking kit and on my SCUBA gear. Unkillable.
