Great except...

First of all, by purchasing this pack, I discovered 30L is just too small for me, but that isn't reflected in the 4 stars, its just personal preference. The reason I didn't give this bag 5 stars is because of the lack of outside pockets. The two side pouches would have sufficed, except when you have this bag full (and I used up every cubic inch) there is NO stretch in the pouch openings. I couldn't even fit a 16oz bottle of water in one. Otherwise, it is a well thought out and constructed bag.

*Top pocket is NOT waterproof, it is barely even water resistant. Walked to work this morning and was caught in a somewhat heavy rainfall event (for maybe 10 minutes, not the 24 hours they tout for the bag). When I got into work, I went through the top pocket to get something, I found that a personal item that I kept in the pocket for safekeeping was ruined. I am extremely annoyed with this and will be returning the pack. Other pockets do seem to be pretty water resistant, the rest of my things were dry when I opened my pack up.

Perfect Multipitch Backpack

Key reasons why I love this pack: 1. Enough liter capacity to carry extra rope, warm clothes, food, a 2 liter water bladder, and any extra gear. for my multi-pitch climbs 2. The waist and chest straps keep the weight balanced and more on my hips which helps me forget about all the things I'm carrying while I climb/approach a craig 3. Easy to open/close main pocket with drawstring design 4. Waterproof and gorgeous color (I own Dark Raspberry) 5. Adjustable straps to make the pack as little or large as I need it 6. Gear loops don't overlap with my harness gear loops! Very handy 7. Height of pack does not interfere with any of my climbing (especially important when I'm looking straight up when I am climbing and don't feel the pack pushing my head forward like previous ones have)

It merits the mountain hard wear logo

Great pack. I bought it as a school pack, which I understand underutilizes every one of its sweet features. however, mountain hard wear consistently makes top of the line quality products that just look so good its almost hard to use them. I have tested it out in a very wet blizzard for several hours and a heavy downpour, neither time did my pack get wet at all. I was incredibly impressed even the outside of shoulder straps are Out Dry so the pack is incredible at not getting wet at all. The functionality of the pack is incredible, and the pack looks super good. I would recommend it and hope to get a larger one for backpacking in the future.

Truly Waterproof!

Never thought something was completely waterproof until I hiked 6 miles of 10 mile hike in the pouring rain. I am not talking drizzle, it poured. Shoes were soaked to the point of puddles under my feet. I thought for sure my down vest and everything in my pack would be soaked. I refused to open the pack when I got back to my car because it was still raining so hard. When I got home, everything was completely dry! Amazing pack! Only gripe is the Velcro that holds the hydration bladder. It kept coming undone and my bladder falling to the bottom of the pack so I had to rig something up with a metal ring and a small, non-load bearing carabiner. Overall, this is an excellent pack.

Seemingly great backpack

Have not had it long enough to really have tested, but already got an email asking to review it. It seems like a very well made backpack and has kept water off my things. Agree with another review I read previously though, the external pockets should be made of a different material that has a little stretch. Water bottles don't need to be kept dry, but they do need space and losing internal space by carrying one is dumb.

Nice and simple, mostly waterproof

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I use this backpack mainly for commuting to and from work on my motorcycle. I also use it for weekend trips, and occasionally for hikes. I wanted something simple, waterproof, and not too big/small. I've used this for a couple months, and it works perfectly. I can just throw everything I need for the day in the main compartment, and the top pocket I use for anything I might quickly need. Easy to put on or take off even with a bulky jacket. But watch out that the top compartment is not waterproof. There's a strip of fabric by the zipper that lets water seep in. Other than that, it works great for me.

Nice idea but missed the mark

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got this before a 2 week trip to Norway where I used it everyday for long day hikes. The draw cord frayed and then snapped in the first week under normal use, really infuriating. I've had number of packs over the years that use this type of closure and never had a cord do that. Pros - The waterproofing worked very well in long hard downpours. - Hip belt stashes away when not needed - Exterior water bottle pockets - Is very lightweight Cons - Draw cord frayed and snapped in the first week (as stated above) - The lid isn't adjustable so the pack can't expand vertically, which is one of the best features of a lid design (and one of the reasons I got this pack). - Non-elastic water bottle pouches are really difficult to get things in/out of when fully loaded (as noted by others) - When not full, the lid doesn't sinch down enough to stay closed, just kind flops around.

Nice pack but not really waterproof

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I generally like this pack. It is essentially one big sack with a top pouch. I have taken this pack to Alaska and snowboarding. It worked well for me, but when the weather got rainy and I was out for an extended period of time, the stuff in the top pouch got wet. Good thing that I had my electronics in a zip lock. While the material is waterproof, the zipper on the top pouch is not. the zipper faces your head, and if the pouch is not completly full, water collects where the zipper sits, and the water just seeps in. So, while I like it for dry or snowy conditions, would not recommend in the rain or if it is really wet. I wish the zipper was better covered and uses a more waterproof material.

Rugged Rainproof Daypack

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am a wildlife biologist who spends a great deal of time in the field and relies on my gear to get the job done. I wanted a new daypack that was waterproof to protect my equipment and rugged enough to handle long days of bushwhacking. I am very happy with the Scrambler 30 OutDry pack. The main compartment has done a good job of keeping my gear dry through many a downpour. The top pocket seems to be decently water resistant as well. Though it isn't totally waterproof due to a non-watertight zipper. The fabric is tough and has no problem handling briers. The suspension is comfortable with light to moderate loads. Overall a rugged daypack for someone who doesn't want to worry about their gear getting wet.
