Pretty good!
Used it for one trip to the mountains and back, so far. Initially wondered about the rigidity, but one mounted on the roof, seems good. Light enough that I can lift it onto the roof racks myself. Holds a pretty impressive amount. Did not notice any increase in wind noise, nor any decrease in mileage (mounted on Toyota Highlander hybrid). For those who are curious: it does fit on the stock racks on a 2021 though you will have to adjust the hatch opener so it does not open all the way, to keep it from running into the back of the cargo box. But that is easy. And I was still able to duck under the hatch with minimal stooping (I’m 6’1”.
Need more cargo space, no problem...
I recently purchased this Yakima Skybox 18 after months of looking and reading reviews. I got a good deal on the Memorial Day sale event. Paid $479 plus tax so come out to around $513 OTD. I've been planning a family trip to visit Key West, my wife was so worry about not having enough cargo space to hold the luggage for 8 people in the minivan. Well the day has finally come and we're ready to pack fot the trip, oh man, this thing can hold four luggage and 2 duffle bags along with many other small items, my wife and I are so happy that this box can fit most of the stuff so we can have room in the trunk for the two cooler. Overall I'm happy with the purchase. I'm 5'9 and weight 150, but was able to installed and take it off all by myself. Wind noise is very little or nothing at all. I'm not too worry about the effect on MPG. I'm glad I pick the 18 instead of the 16 or the 21. I will be travel more often, I will do a 3 months and 6 months review, so stay tune...
Great box, extremely quiet, and massive storage.
Got the SkyBox 18 to supplement the utter lack of cargo capacity in our 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan. Our factory crossbars made quite a bit of wind noise but adding this cargo box completely eliminated any and all wind noise. Truly amazed at how quiet it is. The fit, finish, and capacity are superb.
Same as Skybox Pro
After years of borrowing from a friend, I purchased my own Skybox for our annual trek to Lake Tahoe from San Diego. This newer version is much easier to open and close and with the tapered rear end allows for better clearance above the rear lift door. The box is fundamentally the same as the Skybox Pro, with the only difference being the finish on the lid. Instead of a painted black or silver finish, the surface is dimpled like a golf ball. Oddly. this gives it kind of a carbon fiber look from a distance. I like it and the $100 I saved.
Skybox 18 Carbonite- Very satisfied
Bought the 18cu.ft version in the summer from REI. Relatively easy to install and super easy to re-install in minutes once the interior fastening points have been adjusted. Used it heavily for trips from upstate to Manhattan and back on OEM Audi bars on an A4 and works perfect. It has been through rains, storms, snowstorms and winds and it just works perfectly all the time. No trace of water ever inside. Wind noise is not that bad and actually very little. Little to no drop in millage. I've been able to get 30-32 mpg actual on highway with this on the roof.
Fantastic Rooftop Box. Period.
Yakima has always made some of the best stuff. I gotta start this simply by stating that many folks' reviews below are difficult to read as I imagine and cringe. 1-star for box-fitment on your vehicle? 1-star for not reading the latch instruction? Ugh. FYI: ours is the Skybox 16 Carbonite version which is mounted on their Timberline towers with Corebar crossbar atop a 2017 Forester. (Fits like a glove - the 18 would have been fine I'm sure.) And, full disclosure: I am *not* an accomplished trophy trout stream fly fisherman, so you'll need to take my words with a grain of salt! The SKS system is great with these as I have this roof-box, and the rail towers keyed the same. We've been wanting to add a rooftop tent for a year or more now and if we do... same SKS key compatible, easy peasy. That's worth the price of admission. The only reason I deduct 1 star is for the lock/latches sometimes being fiddly, but much of that is due to how adjustable they are for different rail configuration. I'll take it. And I wish the box would open an inch or two wider. That's about it. A ton of room. INCREDIBLY sturdy for weight of the box. Very adjustable yet rock-solid mounting points. Ours has been out in the weather for 3 years now, rain and sun and though slightly faded it still looks very good considering. Also important to note that the operation of the top and lock/latch systems have been affected not a bit by all that exposure. The other thing I love is that though they're beefy, the weight of these is light enough that I can muscle it onto the Forester and position it by myself if need be (more hands make less work, but, ya know). Keeps the rain/weather out very very well. Minimal road/wind noise or handling penalty. It's a great box and I haven't been very nice to this thing (photo shows it's normal at-rest position protected by our nothing but our roof eaves) and it's not let me down in 3 and more seasons.
Adds Extra Space without sacrificing MPG
I was a little nervous that my Forester was going to loose a lot of mpg's while this thing was on the roof but as long as I kept the car around 70-72 mph on the highway it was fine. At higher speeds the box does flex the cross bars. Despite the flexing it never came loose after a 2000 mile road trip. I wonder if yakima cross bars would be stiffer. It was nice that the rear is shaped in a way that allows the rear tailgate to fully open and the latch system is great. I was a little nervous at first at how flexy the plastic feels but I couldn't be happier at how it performed. We had it jammed packed with stuff but it kept it safe and dry. I like the fact that I can open it on both sides and the locking mechanism seems well built. I had used a Thule before but did not like how it worked, but you should go into REI to try both for yourself.
Great Self-Deployment Function
This box was great for the 3 years I had both parts of it. It was large enough for my family's ski's, snowboards and whatever else we could not fit in the car. That is, until the unfortunate lift-off of the top lid (fortunately blew sideways off the highway and not into another car). Although I will likely be buying another one, I will definitely pay more attention to ensure all (3) latches on both sides are secured properly. I think mine took off when something got stuck in one of the latches, but hard to tell from the postmortem inspection. It was a sideways 50mph gust driving out of a mountain pass when she peeled off. Other than that, great box. For those who are wondering about drag and effect on mpg, I dropped from 27 to 22 with the box on if I kept the speed at 65.
Black Bayou Rocky Ridge K2 Yakima 18
Perfect product for any off road outdoor enthusiast that is trying to maximize performance and function.
Easy to use, expanded my storage more than hoped!
I purchased this to make more room for camping gear for a few buddies of mine. It holds an REI Kingdom 6, marmot limestone 4, 6 sleeping bags, all the sleeping pads to go with them and enough clothes for a week away from civilization! I can now let all the guys ride in the car with me while our gear travels above us. Carpooling on our camping trips has been made possible with this roof box. No more caravaning 2 or 3 cars to the mountains!
