More than just a hammock rain fly
It is pretty obvious from the size of this tarp that it is meant for more than just a hammock rain fly. We got stuck in three days of rain of the superior hiking trail last year. This was one of the tarps we brought along as a group shelter, and gave us a dry community space. Oh also a birch tree fell on it, and it survived (see picture). One of the plastic guy line attachments broke off, but that was easily replaced. Bottom line is that it is hard to find a rectangular tarp with this coverage or quality for less. If you are new to tarps, avoid anything with metal grommets. The wind will tear them right out of the fabric.
Does exactly what it's marketed to do!
Sure, it's not the lightest in the group of similar products and it is definitely XL in size, but it's not like this isn't stated in the product specs. Can't believe some people give it a low rating for somehow actually being the stated size or weight. It's a breeze to pitch with 6 stakes and a pair of trekking poles. All tie downs have a small gap that fits pole tips or stakes perfectly. I'm 6'2" and 225 pounds and easily slide in with the sides staked near-flush to the ground. Plenty of room to keep my 65L pack beside me and away from the rain while sleeping in a bag and bivy. Only reason I gave it 4 stars was because the included line for tie downs is super stiff and may take several iterations of getting wet and drying to soften up.
Perfectly good tarp
ENO makes a very good quality product. If you are a backpacker, you can go with a smaller tarp. If you are a boater/rafter weight is not an issue, you will always appreciate larger tarp in adverse weather. You should probably put longer lines on the tarp than comes with it. Trees are never in the optimal spread. And be sure not to use paracord or other nylon line which will stretch and sag. As an experienced hammock hanger, I can say that ENO stuff is all good quality, but not always adjustable to the real world. In the pacific northwest, some of the fir trees are 6 feet in circumference - needing longer ridgelines and hammock suspension straps. Sometimes you want to hang the tarp low such as when in a storm, or hand it high as in hot weather when you want shade and air circulation (and when you need much longer tie outs). Get more cord and learn your knots.
Easy to set up, great quality
I bought this two weeks ago and took it to the NC Blue Ridge Mountains to go hammock camping with my other ENO gear. The rain fly is really easy to set up; requiring only to be secured to the trees you've set your hammock between. However, there are four lines that run out from the corners of this rain fly which need to be secured via tent stakes. This was not obvious when I bought the fly, as I assumed everything I needed was included. Someone else had 4 extra small metal tent stakes, which were more than adequate to tie off to. When taught, this fly did not move much in the wind. I stayed in 20-degree weather with a 10-15mph wind in the mornings and was shielded nicely by this fly. I would highly recommend this rain fly so far, as I have not been able to test it out in the rain but feel quite confident it would do just fine at this point.
Worked as expected- No issues so far
Ive used this rain fly several times now for shade and in downpours. Works as expected. Im glad I opted for the XL as it covers my hammock and then some. Due to the size, it can be challenging to find trees far enough apart, but I was aware of that issue prior to purchase and still chose the XL. For me, having the extra cover is worth the effort of searching for the right trees.
Great tarp, flimsy hardware.
The tarp itself is great but the hooks and cord tighteners bend and break easily in high winds. I’ve replaced them with carabiners and camjam cord tighteners as there’s no point returning the tarp to just get another with cheap hardware.
Too big to handle
I got this XL Tarp to be used with my ENO JungleNest. Some reviews suggested that the regular ENO ProFly wasn't quite large enough to protect in a heavy rainstorm, so I opted for a larger covering. But this product is just too big. Here are my problems with it: 1. You need a large enough clearing to accommodate the huge footprint of the tarp. Not only do you need trees far enough apart to tie off the top ridgeline, you can't have trees too close on the sides or they will interfere with the side lines. 2. The best distance between trees for the tarp may not be best for your ENO. I found trees about 15 feet apart, which worked great for the tarp. But I had to stretch my hammock to the very last loops on the Atlas straps. There's probably a better distance that works for both but in the wilderness you can't always be that choosy. If you were going to use the ProFly XL then I would recommend using the XL Atlas straps as well. 3. The tie cords for the ridgeline are too short. The cords are barely long enough to wrap around a tree with a medium-large circumference. I fixed this by using 1-3/8” screweyes (see picture). They screw into a tree by hand pretty easily and reduce the need for longer ridgeline cords. 4. Probably my biggest complaint is that the ridgeline cords to not stay taut. There is a neat mechanism for tightening all six cords, but the ridgelines kept popping slack after a few minutes. (Yes, I did tie off the right end of the cord.) I went on a backpacking trip with my son recently and his regular ProFly tarp worked just fine. I ended up tying the cord ends around the corners of the tarp to prevent slipping (see picture). The only positive thing I can say is that it kept me dry! We had a torrential downpour over night and both of us stayed dry with our respective tarps. I’m returning mine for a regular ProFly Rain Tarp.
Kept me nice and dry in the driving rain.
The first time I got to use my ProFly XL Rain Tarp was up on the Mogollan Rim supporting an endurance race. It had rained the night before getting up there and the forcast was for more. I was glad to be hammock camping up off of the ground. We got slamed with rain for 16hr that afternoon and well into the next day. This tarp kept me nice and dry the whole time and held fast to the wind all the way though. My friend had the regular size ProFly and while he stayed just as dry he had to rig his a lot tighter to his hammock. When rigged for rain I felt mine was a lot more comfortable and open because the advantage of the extra size. It is a little bit more to pack up and it would be nice to have a slightly larger bag to keep it in. I would have given it 5 stars but I am not really a fan of the plastic rope grab do-hickies. I guess they are good for someone who has note learned a proper knot. I think I spent more time fiddling with those than I would have with a rolling hitch or a truckers hitch.
Wonderful tarp for hammock in the rain!
Overall I was extremely satisfied with this product! Setting up was so easy that I was able to do it in the dark without any practice in less than a minute. The extra length was superb for keeping me and my stuff dry during some severe rain while we were camping. My friends liked it so much that they ended up buying one as well -- even though none of them have hammocks! I only have two minor gripes. First, the stakes that come with this are not the strongest. Second, I wish there were guylines along the middle as well. It doesn't need them for casual use, though I will probably upgrade to some nicer stakes for some extra peace of mind.
Perfect for the rain
We had a tent but we wanted a place to hangout under during the bad weather. This thing was the best investment we made. We set it up so as soon as we walked out of the tent we were under the tarp. Plenty of room for our flex lites and our friends. It also helped tunnel a draft into our tent for more air flow.
