Wife's snowshoes, still great for backcountry

I purchased these for my wife so that she would go on some short hikes with me. I have the ultra rugged MSR Lightning Ascents but she doesn't need to conquer harder terrain. I ended up using these at Snow Lake on New Years Eve (7 miles 1,700' vertical) when my buddy couldn't find his. They are not meant to climb up icy terrain but they performed admirably. I would have preferred to have my heel lifters and extra traction, but for the price these are incredible. They are much lighter weight than the MSR Lightning Ascent so I was able to break trail with considerably less effort. When I'm hiking lines to snowboard in the backcountry and won't need extra grip for icy hills, I just might take these instead.

The weight-load specifications on the REI website stated these snowshoes were good for up to 180 lbs without tails. When they arrived the tag specified the load was for packed snow up to 225 lbs but in soft snow tails would be needed above 125 lbs. I weigh about 150 lbs, and as described, these were fine on packed snow and slightly packed snow, but soft or untouched snow I sank about a foot sometimes more. If you know you are sticking to regularly used trails, these snowshoes will be fine and the side teeth did provide extra grip when the trail was a little icy. However, I ended up returning these for a model that didn't require tails for my weight. I also had a misaligned hook for one of the straps and couldn't straighten it; this caused the toe strap to come loose after an hour of walking (shorter time when plunging through soft snow).

8 years and still going strong

I bought these snow shoes as my first pair 8 years ago, they are great beginner shoes because they work for most terrain and they are fairly light weight. Even though I've upgraded for speed I still feel myself using these many times because they are stable and sturdy. As a matter of fact I just used these on a 22 mile trek with a best friend who had rented a similar pair and they stayed out and comfortable the whole trek. The straps themselves are tricky but once you figure them out they stay put for good. My suggestion would be practice strapping them at home before hitting the trails. Great for the price and great if your looking for long term durability.

Worked Well, Easy to Fasten

These snowshoes worked great for our hikes in the Colorado Rockies. They were so easy to put on that my 83 yr. old father could do it on his own with no issues. They stayed securely fastened, too.

High speed, low drag.

I used this set climbing up Glacier Peak in the fall, with 3.5 feet of snow, they just pushed the snow down while I pulled them through a wall of snow each step. But once added the flotation tails (http://www.rei.com/product/875173/msr-evo-modular-snowshoe-flotation-tails-6#tab-reviews) I was sitting on the surface. I was rucking a 55 lb pack and I already weigh 200 lbs being 6'4" so I'm sure that made an impact on the shoes. These are extremely lightweight, durable, and reliable. Glove friendly and they just look down right sexy. Once again, if you are rucking long distance embrace the tails, they made a significant impact on keeping me on the surface. Would rate 5 but the tails are $40, and I wouldn't buy these snow shoes if you aren't buying the fins.

Easy to put on with mittens

We are 60 year old recreational users that snowshoe several times a year. The bindings were difficult to figure out at first but, once used to them, they can be put on and tightened leaving your mittens or gloves on. This leaves a somewhat floppy long strap that can be tucked into a keeper as long as the keeper is in the right place. We bought the extra tails for deep fluffy snow and almost lost one when it detached, but another hiker found it and returned it to us. Be careful to tighten and check them. These minor problems aside, we love these snowshoes. They are very light and can go up and down impossible looking terrain (for us) and have added to our winter enjoyment. My recommendation is to make sure you take time to fully understand the binding system before going out.

Performance Review

Purchased December 2015 My first time using the MSR Evo shoes, and I have to say I’m very impressed with the performance. I spend a lot of time off-trail, and in the deep backcountry… because of this, there’s fair amount of steep and off-camber terrain to negotiate, so I needed something that would handle the hills in all directions. I tested the shoes on 20-30% snow covered inclines, declines, and off-camber traverses, and have to say I was very impressed with how solid and comfortable the shoes felt even when negotiating some difficult obstacles. Not one time did I feel my boot wanted to slide forward or backward in the binding, and on the off-camber sections I didn’t feel like the binding was limiting my mobility due to a lack of suppleness. In short, these shoes performed better than I expected…

A great alternative!

Went for my first snowshoe with these and found them light, easy to manage and making romping around in the woods loads of fun! One back strap kept slipping out of its clasp and got hooked on my other snowshoe causing a trip and fall. Will have to figure out how to clasp it securely in snowy circumstances.

Durable and reliable entry level pair of snowshoes

We have a pair of these that is almost 10 years old and they are still going strong. A comment on customer service- we have both this pair of snowshoes and one from a main competitor. After much use in Colorado and the Southwest they both needed replacement "keeper clips" for some of the straps. One e-mail to MSR customer support resulted in a free delivery within a week or so. Three weeks later I have received no response from the other vendor. Clearly MSR backs up their product!

MSR Evo Snowshoes

These are great. My husband and I bought them for ourselves in March 2020, and we used and enjoyed them so much this past winter that we decided to buy a pair for my sister so we can enjoy hiking in the snow together next winter. We waited all winter for this model to come back. They're great on snow and ice. We took hikes on the Appalachian trail and walked the length of a frozen lake without slipping once. Bindings work well. Adjustable. Flat and hilly terrain.
